So sorry Nifty. Ahh! It seems we work so hard to protect our chickens and then some sneaky little thief defies us and gets to one of our sweet birds.

I believe the dog may well come back. Hopefully your fix-up job keeps him out.

Sorry for your loss, Nifty. That is really frustrating!! I would definately mention it to the owners, if you can find them. Give them a chance to fix the problem. Sometimes no matter how hard we try, those dogs can escape like Houdini!!

I lost two turkeys and a chicken to a dog earlier this year. Bad thing was, it was MY dog!! Somehow, she kept getting out of the electric fence. I showed her, though. She now has an electric fence stronger than the one we use for the pigs! She won't come near it..

Rob, so sorry to hear of this. But you are right in your assumption that once a dog gets the taste of blood, especially an easy target like a chicken or a duck they will continue to revisit that area where they found easy hunting.

Buster is right, once a dog starts chasing deer, he will continue. That is why in sheep country a proven sheep killer is destroyed automatically, no questions asked.

The unfortunate thing is that the dog is following it's natural instinct and has not been properly trained. Also more and more people are just taking their dogs and dumping them in rural areas instead of taking them to a shelter because they can no longer care for them.

Hopefully you will have no more trouble.

Sorry to hear you lost your first chicken.I'm sure its just a matter of time until i lose my first bird. I have all the usaul predators aroud, coons, dogs, feral cats ,opossums,red tails and shady two legged one too..! Tighten up security, like the others said, now that the dog has tasted your chicken, he will likely be back for another hit...!

The only local predator that I'm not worried about is the two legged kind. I just can't even imagine someone going into our back yard to get at our tiny flock.

Question:

Why did the dog drop the hen when I went outside? I don't think it was because the hen was struggling... I'm wondering if the dog knew it was doing something wrong?
