NEVER use a kiddie pool as a brooder.

Not cruel in my book. If I didn't have to worry about the grown birds pecking the little ones to death they would already be in the coop outside under a light! It's just easier that way.

Which why I built a 4 x 3 x 2 wheeled cage that serves as a brooder-growing cage.
It is also the sort of thing one keeps out of the house, being made of wood and wire. Im one of those that reckons out-of-the-house is where chickens belong.

I'm with you David. Chickens, even as chicks, don't belong in the house. Mine were brooded in an outbuilding and then lived on the screened porch till their coop was ready. Too messy, too stinky, too dusty to be in the house. Living on a dirt road there's enough dust in this house without adding chicks.

Not cruel at all. I don't brood chicks in the house. My next batch will start out in an outbuilding for a couple of weeks and then to the big coop (seperated from the big girls of course).

I always brood chicks in my spare room. The temp is stable and it's convenient, I can check on them several times a day. I start them out in a clear rubbermaid container, then move them to a rubber stock tank that I used to use for my horse. I cover the tank with an old screen from my front storm door. It still has the frame on it so that gives it some weight and the tiny mesh of the screen helps cut down the dust.

I have 5 weeks olds in my spare bedroom. I vaccume twice a week, change the litter every other day. No odor, not much dust, but I only have 3. Use a 6' long double cardboard box lined with heavy plastic, pine shavings...
