I'm with you David. Chickens, even as chicks, don't belong in the house. Mine were brooded in an outbuilding and then lived on the screened porch till their coop was ready. Too messy, too stinky, too dusty to be in the house. Living on a dirt road there's enough dust in this house without adding chicks.

I always brood chicks in my spare room. The temp is stable and it's convenient, I can check on them several times a day. I start them out in a clear rubbermaid container, then move them to a rubber stock tank that I used to use for my horse. I cover the tank with an old screen from my front storm door. It still has the frame on it so that gives it some weight and the tiny mesh of the screen helps cut down the dust.

I have 5 weeks olds in my spare bedroom. I vaccume twice a week, change the litter every other day. No odor, not much dust, but I only have 3. Use a 6' long double cardboard box lined with heavy plastic, pine shavings...

I used an old tv box fit perfectly was about 3 feet tall....
