Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Helped care for my mother in-laws hens/ducks and finally got a few chickens of my own.
How many chickens do you have right now?
I have one welsummer rooster, four welly pullets, and four barnevelder pullets.
What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Raising my own hens for eggs is really rewarding. I like knowing how my hens are treated, what they're fed, and the level of care they receive. Chickens have such a sweet nature and are really worth while friends.
Some of my hobbies:
I like to hunt for mushrooms, hike, draw, and make things. Recently I made a set up for raising mealworms for my hens. I have two goats that I also tend to. Also I have been experimenting with making cheese.
I've gotten a lot of nice info from BYC and decided to join BYC to get some help with a breeding project I want to start. I want to get a rainbow of eggs and thought I'd try my hand at making some OE's. So far I have some dark brown egg layers but I'm looking to get some blue egg layers to make an EE. I'm having a hard time deciding between appearances, production, and what hens really do produce a nice quality blue egg. I've thought of doing BBR Araucanas and try for something rumpless that would have a good feather color for Welly combo. Obviously I still have a lot of research to do, and some time before I decide to execute the plan. I just like to get things down on paper first.
Thanks for reading!
