well it is day 23 and last night four more baby cochins hatched in the new incubator. I lost the one i tried to help and then one was just broke through the egg, just the beak sticking out, seemed ok at first but then started a gasping type of breathing. I kept my hands to myself, but it did not get its shell broken any further. It seemed to have a sticky substance on its beak and it was so tight in the shell , It was a smaller egg so maybe that was the problem. Another just hatched making a total eight alive and well. There are 10 more eggs, and one is pipping. So I guess so far that is not so bad. My cochins are standard size. I have12 adults of which 10 are hens and 2 roosters. I have white , buff , blue, and black with white on them, forget what their coloring is called. Do you believe i now have 5 hens sitting on eggs, but usually dont have much luck as something usually happens to them. Right now i have 6 cats that my dear neighbor left when they moved, all fixed and shots, but am afraid they will be buggers on any babies the moms may hatch. I am so tired of irresponsible pet owners. I havent been able to find the cats homes and the next step would be the spca or humane league. Really hate to take that on. thinking about trying to find her and tell her she needs to take them. We have many feral cats also. amish dont take advantage of some of the spay neuter programs and i seem to get them here also. with help from a wonderful lady that traps and takes them to fixed we hope there will be no kittens at my house. Does anyone else have cochin chickens? I just love them as they are so sweet and like to be with you when you are out and around. Guess if my babies make it through the next couple days they will do okay. I never had any luck with the incubators but this time i invested in an egg turner which may be why i have had a little luck this time. By the way have any of you heard of a problem called shrink wrap which it appears to fit the description of the peep i lost.

Congratulations !!!!!!!!!!!!!! When your humidity is off .. or they pip but dont break through and are a long time hatching the membrane can dry and tighten making it impossibel for the chick to get out ! Way to go on such a Great Hatching !

congrats on your babies........

thank you everyone and congratulations and good luck with your babies . Thanks about the humidity as that must be an issue as i still have hatching going on. have three more so now have 11 but the one has problems with her legs. she sort of scoots and uses her wings to balance. one foot has some curled toes and she also seems to be splay legged but keeps them more in front of her, kind of on her hocks. Should i let her alone until tomorrow and then try the hobbling treatment they mention and the shoe? Or does anyone have any other ideas . Any suggestions would be appreciated. looking forward to hearing any suggestions. Thanks donna

thank you for your reply. I guess we are all critter people here. Besides my chickens we have 2 guineas, four small dogs, a pom ,a lhasa, peekapoo and a rescue shitzu that was a puppymill breeder, 7 yrs old when we got her 2 years ago and one of the most gentle souls ever. Guess they appreciate a home after that life. My dear sweet lhasa would probably kill a chicken if she had it long enough. One got in the fenced in area that i leave the dogs out in and our normally lazy lucy shot across the enclosure and had my poor hen in a second. lucky for the hen i was there to get her as lucy was plucking feathers. Also have three indoor cats . Dont you just love your critters? They are like the best friend , they just listen no questions asked. Thank you again for your response to my post. donna

one thing about it you can never feel lonely. Well this is day 24 and i just had another chick hatch, but am thinking these late bloomers may not fair well. One died in the brooder overnight and another is still in the incubator that is very unthrifty looking and then one from yesterday has splayed legs so i now have to try to tape her legs up. I hope i dont loose anymore. My incubator is now getting a little stinky but i guess i will let it go one more day. dont know how good that will be for the new one that just hatched. Have you ever treated one with splayed legs. These cochins have the feathers on the legs and i wonder about getting the tape off. poor thing has little sore areas on the hocks from scooting on the hardware of the incubator, put some paper towel down but of course it wont stay on it. now is in a watch box in the incubator. If anyone has some suggestions i would appreciate it. thank you donna

i have a bottle of nutra drench for poultry that you add to the water, do you think i should do that for these weaker ones? it is a nutritional supplement
