It has been a while since I have hung around the quail thread. Hopefully most of you are doing well. Just hatched out 14 new ones yesterday and just wanted to share

Cute! What do you do with quail?? I was listening to a farmer today talk about quail, but didn't quite figure out what he wanted them for, sounded like he just wanted them on the land...

Meat for my dog, eggs for my kitchen and manure for my garden.

I was thinking meat for the dog too. How big is your dog and how many does he eat a day? I have a jack and a Chussels Griwawa

I had a baby rooster die today. Poor little guy's head was stuck in the chicken wire! I think he broke his neck. :( I guess I will bury him but I have considered fixing him up for my animals to eat.
My dog and cat got into the bag where I placed 2 chicks that died while trying to hatch, and ate them. I was horrified at first lol but then I thought hmmm that is an interesting and efficient way to dispose of them. I have really been giving some thought to raising my own meat for my other pets since that episode a week or so ago.

How do you process your birds before feeding to the pets?

My dog is 60 lbs. When she used to eat kibble around 5 years ago she was fed between 3/4 cup to 1 cup twice a day. Her diet since raw consists of about a cup of meat/organs 2 times a day. She has a hypo thyroid and the prey model diet has decreased her meds by 50%. My quail are small, not jumbos. Generally around 5-6 oz. One quail is sufficient for 1 meal. We skin them and remove their heads. I only do this because I have ducks that my dog is around all the time and do not want her to associate the feathers and head as a free meal. Her poop is awesome, it disentigrates into the ground within a couple days so I never have to scoop poop. She also poops very little because her body actually absorbes the nutrients. Her breath, coat, and nails are amazing and she definitely doesn't look or act her age. She is almost 12. I wish I would have started her from a puppy. My cat has been on raw since he was born.

*We also feed my dog/cat duck. We take out the breast for ourselves (even though it would be good for therm) and give her the rest of the carcass minus the head and skin.

I think I will be doing something similar very soon. Thanks for the info.
