new batch..join me!

This is so much fun..I just love all the post...and thanks everyone for feeling my pain with the dropped egg! I went on Craigs list today and 3 people in my area were giving away chickens! I got 3 hens from one and the big score was 4 polish crested 1 year old chickens! 3 hens and a rooster! Free! What crazy looking chickens! Just love the rooster! ...I know what eggs I'll be hatching next!

Candeled some eggs that are on day 4--- 8 of 8 were fertile and viable with happy tiny dancing babies!
I just candled my duck eggs that are on day 4. I can only see the beginnings of veins in some of them. I'm not positive, but 1 of them may have a blood ring.

Can't wait to see dancing babies!

Are duck eggs allowed or is this just for chicken eggs?

It would be great to be with others incubating right now.

This is my first time incubating. I set 13 duck eggs on Tuesday in my homemade bator. I think I've done a pretty good job on my incubator, the temp and humidity stay pretty stable. I'm home most of the time and I am constantly checking on it. I check on it about as much as you would a sleeping newborn baby. I think I've become obsessed with it!

Hollymh - congrats, how exciting to see those tiny babies.

Nsampsel - Wow, thats a lot of eggs to keep track of. I can't quit checking my bator with only 18 eggs. Being a first timer I just want to make sure temp and humidity levels are right. So far so good. Can't wait to candle on day 7. Hope I know what I am looking at when I candle.

This is my 1st time around too. I have candled once, when the 1st batch was on day 6 & the newest ones at that point were day 2. I found 1 that looked like it may be clear & 1 that looked like maybe a bloodring (both out of my own hen's eggs). My broody lets me check under her to collect the egg my other hen lays in her nest each day & just fluffs up a bit. She only tried to peck me once & that was when I checked after dark last night & she couldn't see who it was. She pecks the crap out of the kids...LOL I can sit there & pet her & everything & she barely fluffs at all til I check under her, then she puffs out a good bit.

As for keeping straight which eggs are which, each batch is marked with a code for what it is on 1 side & a number on the other side. Each batch also has it's own color. I have the codes, what they mean, who the eggs came from, day they were set, day of expected hatch & day to stop turning on a sheet of paper all color coded for each batch. I also put my eggs in with the opposite side (numbers or letter code) up from whatever turn I am on. I turn 3x per day so that makes it so that when I start turning that batch they will be on the same side as the other eggs.

When it comes time for each batch to hatch I will make sure they don't have anything sitting on top of them.

I have eggs stacked all over each other, so I also try to rotate top & bottom level when I turn.

I did a google search for egg candling and found some great pics and videos that are really helpful.

I candled again this morning (can't help myself, lol) and saw a heart beating in one of them! I was like a kid on Christmas morning!

That's my problem..not sure how to candle! I check the bator a lot to make sure all is well!
