New Brahma Group: Blue Partridge x Partridge, Plus Dark

Love this photo. "Just chillin' while you swoon at how freakin' cute I am." Your flock is just awesome, from old ladies to babies!
Thank you. Just look at those legs! Oh my, that is a tall chickster! Those Brahmas just melt once you pick them up. I picked one up and held it against my chest and it went to sleep so fast, I was worried something was wrong with it, LOL. My BRs are nothing like that. They struggle to get down, they have things to do, can't be hanging too long with the humans, you know. They're friendly, but they're busy!

... as well as the Delawares! Oh, my, a flock full of Georgies would be very painful. A Delaware says "Oh, you won't pet me? Oh, yes, you will! You will also let me sit on your shoulder like an 8 lb parrot! If you don't, I'll bite the fire out of your shin!" Those BRs are most definitely little heathens but they're super adorable ones. I love BRs and always will.

Yes, the friendly-but-not-pesky trait, that's what I loved about both Caroline and Miranda, my Brahmas; they weren't always tripping me up or shaking my pants leg and getting a chunk of skin with it.

Lol! Now that you mention it, I do trip over my one barred rock probably more than any other hen, and she goes for my toes when she doesn't get what she wants!! But my light brahma is by far the cuddliest. Once I stop and sit she wants to be in my lap :) I would love to add a Delaware to my group someday, they sound like they'd fit right in!

I can't speak to hatchery Delawares because the ones I had were nasty, flighty and aggressive, so I almost refused to do the fertility test for the breeder, whose secret mission was to change my mind about the breed. She was developing a line, breeding for temperament and up to the SOP, so she guaranteed that hers would be completely different. Delawares are supposed to be friendly. If they are not, they are not Delawares, IMO. That is definitely one of the breed traits. Just how friendly is the thing that can make you crazy!

Just to warn you Delawares have special mind control powers. A group of them are strong enough to direct your actions

That they do! Don't look into the eyes of a Delaware chick! This is what will happen....

The best Delawares I have had were from Sand Hill Preservation, but they are not a typical hatchery.

No, they are not. There was a touch of Sand Hill in Isaac's lineage, along with Meier and McDaniel and something else. The nasty ones I had were from McMurray parents.

This is the second Dark Brahma, which feathered in slower than B.J. did. I'm was thinking this is a pullet as well. Sorry the photo is not better, but I don't think the chest feathers coming in are solid black, but sort of patterned. It would be great if they were both pullets because I would probably have to sell a male, just don't have room for two Brahma breeding groups. (((checked again-on the chest, black feather body with brown edging)))

Now that I look again, the chest feathers appear black in the body of the feather with brown edging-so, cockerel?? And foot feathers are mostly grayish, not fully patterned.

Silly chicks make it hard to get a decent picture from the front. This is one of the Partridge.

Hey Cynthia!! Following along here, too!

I guess I never realized Brahma's had a pea comb. Does the same rule apply as with Ameraucanas? 3 row pea- male, single row pea-female?

Love the bell bottom pants they have!!

The three rows in a pea comb are on both sexes, however, they show up much earlier on the males than the pullets and are more pronounced. It applies on all pea combed breeds, including Buckeyes.

Aren't they adorable? I've noticed some have profuse foot feathering and some less so. All are cute, though. What is preferred on a Brahma? I don't know.

There is an issue with vulture hocks on some Brahmas-in the U.S., it's a no-no. It's acceptable in overseas standards, though. I was wondering at what point vulture hocks would be noticeable on a Brahma, just for my own education. I know I've had hatchery Cochins with vulture hocks, which is bad, but it's an acceptable trait with Belgian D'Anvers. Sometimes, what's acceptable and what's not just seems so arbitrary to me. Like WHY is it bad on one and good on another? Why ask why? LOL.

Hmm vulture hocks… had to google that one. Interesting, from the name alone I would have thought it was something truly physical that was off (I know, feathers are physical part of the bird, but you know what I mean). I guess the term "cow hocked" in relation to horses came to mind.

It is funny how they all have different degrees of feathering on their legs. My Cuckoo Marans bot have feathers on their legs-- one has BIG sweepers on the bottoms. Those have worn off now. How do the Brahmas fly? The CM do well getting to roost, but the LF cochins I had were just too big, I guess. Anna still won't stray far from the coop area.
