He is very regal. It is great when a bird whether a cockerel or hen is very beautiful and very sweet at the same time! Doesn`t get much better IMO!

I made a video of Bash today so you can see how elderly he really looks these days. I hope he gets to enjoy warm, dry weather this summer. Winter may not happen for him again in his lifetime, but he's done well to make 9 years old, having barely squeaked past Atlas as the oldest living large fowl rooster ever on this homestead.

Yes, he's the best of both, without a doubt. I refuse to keep aggressive roosters here; life's just too short to have to watch your back while doing chores. All of his sons were just as easygoing and pleasant to have around, I've heard from people who ended up with them over the years.

I underestimated the old man, good grief! I had my 11 week old Omega Rock chicks out and decided that since Bash has never paid any attention to chicks at all, ignores the roosters not in his group when he passes their pens, I would let him, Brandy and Cora out with the kids, thought the kids could easily outrun any of those three old Brahmas. BIG mistake! When Bash saw one of the little cockerels, which are really not little at all anymore, he growled and took off after one. I have not seen Bash run that fast in years! He treated him like a rival and ended up getting some feathers in his beak. I had to intercept him before he actually caught one! The old guy has still got it!

Competition - The elixir of youth

This morning when I lifted Bash down off the roost, I noticed that he was missing both spurs! There was no blood at all, not a drop. On one, the sheath just came cleanly off and on the other, it left a partial ragged remnant of the spur. I didn't see the spurs around until I put him back on the roost tonight. It was the ragged one, seemed very brittle. I am not sure what exactly happened unless he fell because they became curved around each other or what. They were both curved upward and the blunt ends we had Dremeled quite some time ago were touching so they could have become locked together.
Is it possible that they became brittle because of his advanced age? Poor old thing. He won't be around by winter, IMO.
