My Coop
I inherited a 60+ year old chicken coop this year and so what better way to get started with chickens. We got 4 day old Light Brahma's 6 weeks ago. Supposed to be hens but only time will tell I suppose. I suppose you could consider me halfway between a backyard chicken parent and a hobby farm as we live on a "farm" but these chickens are our first livestock to live full time on the property. The chicks are quickly outgrowing the brooder so we're in full coop renovation mode this weekend with hopes to get them in there sooner than later. We live in South Western MN so any Minnesota winter chicken tips are greatly welcome.

Welcome!
Brahmas are great chickens, round, docile and friendly. Good luck with your coop renovations! Since you live in cold weather, make sure the coop is breeze-free. Chickens can take cold temperatures just fine, as long as the air is still and dry. :)

Welcome to Backyard chickens. If you join your state thread you can ask the folks there how they get their chickens through the winter. What breeders do best, and what type of coop is needed. Generally chickens can handle cold much better than heat . They need draft free coops, that have sufficient ventilation. Breed with flatter combs ad much less likely to get frostbite.

Chanteclers were bred to withstand the extreme Canadian winters, they would be good for colder temps.
