Greetings from Middle TN!(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I’ve had 3 chickens before when I lived in CA but never raised any from babies like I am this time.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? I now have 6 that I bought from Tractor Supply, but I don’t know the breeds of them.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Unknown, hopefully someone from this group can help me.
2 are black
2 are beige
2 are beige with a reddish speckled spots on them.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? I love having chickens as pets and for eggs.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I’m newly retired and moved from California to Tennessee. I’m looking forward to gardening and raising chickens, and I also make homemade soap for 4 years.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Mom to 6 kids + 2 bonus kids all grown and on their own.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community.
I was a member since 2015 when I lived in California but haven’t been on in quite a while. Now I have new babies and new coop and thought I better connect to make sure I’m doing the best I can for my new babies.
If anyone can check out my pics and let me know what kind of chickens these are I’d appreciate it. Or look at my coop and give any suggestions. I just moved them to their new coop yesterday. They started in a brooder in my house, then a week and a half ago I booted them and their brooder to my carport with a heat light on only at nighttime and now finally to their new forever home without a heat lamp. I think they will be fine?!? They did very well last night. All happy this morning when I checked them. I opened the door so they can come outside on their own and will check throughout the day and make sure they are inside the coop before dark.
Thanks for the suggestions. The coop does have vents across the back of the coop. So you think the front needs it too? If so, I can get this at my local LOWES and do this project this weekend. I’ll have to figure out how to do the side windows.Welcome to active posting on BYC!Nice to meet you.
You have one of those pre-fabs. I don't have anything good to say about them so I'm going to take Thumper's advice.
BUT, I would remove the boards shown and cover that space with 1/2" hardware cloth so you get better ventilation in there. It gets HOT in TN and they will need ventilation.
If you can make two top hinged windows on the sides I would do that too. Again, secure the openings with 1/2" hardware cloth.

No prefab I've ever seen has adequate ventilation. Thanks for the suggestions. The coop does have vents across the back of the coop. So you think the front needs it too? If so, I can get this at my local LOWES and do this project this weekend. I’ll have to figure out how to do the side windows.
