I am a new chicken mom with a flock of 14. They are ranging in age from 19-21 weeks. I got 5 very pretty perfect little bluish eggs from my Leghorn. Then she stopped which I read was normal. Today I received what I think is a shell less egg. But it felt hard inside so I removed the outer coating and there was a perfect hard shelled little brown egg inside. I cracked open and it was a perfect egg. So my question is what is this egg? Is it normal, what caused it and is it indeed a shell less egg? Also is it normal for a bird to lay for a bit and then stop for a bit? Im in northern CA and it has been pretty hot again. Any comments or suggestions are well appreciated. I attached pics below

New layers will sometimes lay odd eggs until their systems settle. It's all a really big adjustment for their bodies! Even seasoned layers don't always lay every day, so that, in itself, is not unusual. Make sure you offer free-choice calcium (oyster shell or other supplement.) If you are feeding a layer mix, they ,ay not need it, but it won't hurt to have it available. They seem to instinctively know when they need more. When it's super hot out, it's especially important to keep their water fresh and clean.
For now, keep an eye on your girls. If the soft and "wrapped" eggs keep appearing, check out the articles on lash eggs and other oddities, here on BYC. There is a LOT of good information.
Good Luck ... and welcome to your first flock experience. You won't regret it ... Those "free eggs" (hah!) are a lot of work and expense, but they are so worth it ... and the Chicken TV is a huge, added bonus!

But it felt hard inside so I removed the outer coating and there was a perfect hard shelled little brown egg inside. I cracked open and it was a perfect egg. So my question is what is this egg?
Counter peristalsis.
Shelled egg backed up in the system and got another layer of membrane applied.
Hopefully it's just a one off glitch.
