We have had a few roosters in past years, but living in the city they were a big problem. Recently my wife had an opportunity to get 6 hens from a friend at work. She is Filipino and was planning to give three to friends and butcher the rest. After getting to know the chickens I granted them a pardon. My wife was thrilled that we could keep them. We live in a city, have a big yard with wooded areas, but we are away from other homes. First thing I did, was order a coop from Amazon, since the dog kennel they were staying in would not work long term. The coop was pretty flimsy and the first night a raccoon tried to break in. The next day I re-enforced the coop making it stronger and raccoon proof. I also live trapped the raccoon and relocated him. I came here to learn more about chickens to keep them happy and healthy. The three hens are extremely tame and friendly and a real treat to observe. I don't know if they qualify, but to me they have become Therapy Chickens. I hope they make it through the winter.

Glad you decided to join! I started with one of those little prefab coops too... then realized it wouldn't last long term -and I enjoyed my chickens too much to let them go. So I built a new and bigger one... you may find yourself in the same spot!
Watching and caring for those comical feathery cluckers is definitely a therapeutic activity... worth their weight in gold!

The Amazon coop really was kind of flimsy. I spent an entire day strengthening, re-enforcing weak spots, double screening windows and mounting the entire unit on treated lumber. It is 100% better now and really solid. It definitely would not have lasted long as it was, maybe a couple years. We will see how it goes. It was recommended for 3-4 chickens but 3 is the max. Some year I may get ambitious and build a larger deluxe coop now that I am learning more about it. I will start scrounging materials now so I will be ready when the time comes.
