Hi Everyone! I live in North Florida and a week ago a plain white chicken showed up in my yard and stayed. I thought she was going back home at dusk to roost, but come to find out she was sleeping under our vehicles for safety. So I bought her a temporary home using a pet gazebo until I can convert an old small horse stable into her permanent coop. I have provided her with a crate and straw to sleep in but she moves the straw out of the way and sleeps directly on the ground. Is this normal or does she just not like the crate I provided? This new chicken mom needs a little help. Thank you.
 
How nice of you to take her in! Bravo! Your temporary setup sounds okay, and I wouldn't worry too much about her scooting the straw out of the way..chickens are that way, you never know what they're thinking! You asked if she doesn't like the crate you're using...If she stays in it for you at night then there's no problem, maybe only that the space is confining for her. Good luck and keep us updated!!

Chickens do like to rearrange things, you could try putting a lip or something in the front of the crate to keep the straw in a bit until you can get her into the stall with a roost etc.

You might give her a roost bar. Chickens really enjoy roosting up off the floor at night. Makes them feel more secure.

I think she is a "she". I hope so because I have named her after my favorite actress "Sandra". So far so good. It flooded here Friday night and I got worried her temporary home was getting flooded. So I went out in the pouring rain and went inside her pet gazebo to check it out. It wasn't getting too wet, but she was huddled beside her roosting box instead of getting inside it. So I gently picked her up and put her inside of it. She stayed there the rest of the night. But has not used it since. I did put up a roosting rod, but she doesn't use it either. She likes sleeping on the ground. It's also been around 92 to 95 degrees already here in Florida so I have set up a box fan to help her during the hottest part of the day. I cannot wait to get her permanent coop finished!! I think she will like it and I will certainly be able to sleep better at night (we have owls and hawks living on our property).
