Hello! In my experience, it can be expensive to get a flock set up (coop, run, etc.) but after that, it's not real expensive to keep a flock. I'm wondering why you're building so many nesting boxes (8-10)?

I will hopefully a flock of 15-20 one day. How many do you suggest?

how many chickens do you /will you have? you might not need so many nesting boxes. I think its something like only one box for every 5 chickens? I may be wrong but its at least 3 lol

Thank you for the info. I have 6- 1week old bitties. Judging by their wings feathers , I have possibly 4 hens and 2 roosters but only god knows for sure. Lol I hope to have 15-20 hens one day with a couple of roosters in separate coops. So I could start 1-2 boxes and add as I need too. Thank you so much.

Welcome to BYC from central NC literally on the border between climate zone 7b and 8a (seriously -- it passes within a mile of my house).

I strong recommend open Air coops to people in the Steamy Southeast of the USA.

As long as the roost area is protected from drafts (that is, wind strong enough to ruffle their feathers), they're fine all year round in this climate.

I was working on hoop coop but the cattle panels are $60 each and roll of wire is $200. My actual is made from scrap wood and pallets and scrap wire. I really appreciate all the info and suggestions. I am going to concentrate on the hoop coop and do my best to what need. Are hoop coop predator resistant? I do have coyotes and my dogs to worry with? Again thank you so much

My hoop coops with plywood ends have been predator proof from coyotes so far. I still worry as they are the biggest predator I have here in lower Alabama. I do have wire over the cattle panels.
