I let them out sometimes when the weather is nice to free range, and we've actually lost one silkie and a mallard when they were out. We never found them, just up and disappeared. Do you think the roo would be good to keep for protection?

Great point about the kids - hopefully we can undo the damage that's already been done. My 4 year old was attacked by one of the roos early on and it really scared her, understandably. :(

HA....I hope I do. All my girls and my roo are named for musicians (I am a choral director and a pianist). I have Beverly (Beverly Sills, opera singer), Audra (Audra McDonald, opera singer), Clara (Clara Schumann, wife of Robert Schumann), Anna (Anna Magdalena Bach, wife of JS Bach), and Leontyne (Leontyne Price, opera singer). I also had Sarah (named for Sarah Brightman) but Sarah also started crowing one day....along about the time Bruce Jenner was going through his changes so I changed his name to.....Bruce....and found him a new home~

Lianndra, very nice to meet you. Welcome to Backyard chickens. You have a lovely setup for your birds. You husband did a beautiful job. I like to say "there is never a good reason to keep a bad rooster." There are so many deserving roos desperate for homes, - good ones can be found if you feel you need one. If you ever get the urge to hatch chicks, you can always buy an incubator and fertile eggs. Or get one of the broody breed hens like, silkies, cochins, buff orps etc. When they do go broody, you can slip some "fertile" eggs under them and they will hatch and raise chicks as their own.

Given the amount of damage a chicken's/rooster's claws, beak and talons can do, you are best to get rid of any aggressive birds now. With young kids around, it isn't worth the risk.
 
I haven't had any aggression issues just mounting issues.. I ended up with 3 roosters one is mini puff ball. Just started crowing. Ones a cuddle bug and one is originally the in charge one but the cuddly one brownie is the dominant one now. I am desperately in need of hens. I have one and being out of season hard to find. I'd like another silkie for the one rooster and 2 egg layers.. I have a home for one rooster but mine have grown up together and don't fight and hen is smart.. also have 2 ducks suppose to be peking but male looks like a mallard. But I have had ducks and these two are constantly mating....it's crazy. But if anyone lives in southern md who sells hens please let me know..
 
An update - we got rid of our last roo a few weeks ago. He was attacking everyone and just too aggressive in general. Shortly after he was gone, we lost half the flock; the two ducks were killed/eaten by something, along with a silkie and a bantam hen. Still not sure what or how it happened...but seems like an awful coincidence that it was directly after we got rid of the roo. I feel pretty bad about it actually. Now we are down to 6 birds from 13, and it's a little depressing. :-(
