New coop w/poop pit pics, finished!!!

Really, really nice. My chickens would love all that room! Keep those updates coming.

Great job and I like the poop pit idea. Thought of it for my coop but am in Tennessee so I thought it might be too cold and drafty in wintertime. Did a linoleum covered poop plank instead. Requires daily scraping but only takes minutes. It goes to compost in warm weather and into garden in cooler weather. Now seeing it, I could have done a poop pit for warm months, and poop plank for cool months.

I assume you have to keep the chooks fenced out of the poop pit ? Am afraid mine would be down there pecking and picking thru it all. If I did it, I would keep a pile of lime on hand to sprinkle in there.

I have welded wire over the poop pit. In one of my older coops I have 2"x4" wire. In the new coop I went with 1"x2" wire. I also build cages so the left over wire will be used for cages.

How do you plan to clean it? Or will it just compost under the coop? I've thought of this but with some sort of catch board under the pit that could be pulled out and hosed off...

I just rake it out. I do put it in my compost piles. I guess I could put boards under the wire but I have been raking it out from under my older coop. I have a tractor with a front end loader so I just rake the poop into the bucket then dump it into the compost piles.

Here is the progress report for today. We finished the nest boxes. I have them primed and will paint and install them tomorrow. Also we made a ladder for the roosts and a gate for the run. Today I painted the trim on the coop. Hopefully tomorrow we will finish so we can move the birds in.

The coop is pretty well completed. We still have a little work to do on it but that can be done after the birds are moved in. The roost ladder and nest boxes got painted today and installed and also the run gate was installed. I have a little work in the morning to set the post for the run next to the gate then we will be ready for the birds. Also I still have to block the top of the nest boxes so the birds don't get up on them and poop.

Poop pit pics, poop pit pics, poop pit pics (type that three times fast!)

I came here to your thread just based on the allure of the title! What chicken lover can resist poop pit pics?

And seriously, that looks like a great idea for a coop in your warmer climate.

Sorry for this non-useful response, going to bed now.

Actually anyone can have a poop pit in their coop. If I lived in a colder climate I would just use some plywood around the bottom of the coop and hinge it on the side of the poop pit for access to rake it out once in awhile. The poop will probably freeze in the winter.
