So last winter my mom gave away our hens to a friend who lost her flock to a coyote, and she swore no more chickens! YEAH RIGHT!

Well my mom loves chickens and earlier this spring she got more, she has a golden laced Wyandotte, Speckled Sussex, Blue Andalusian, and a Delaware. She also has A giant blue cochin and giant buff cochin that are technically mine just living at her house (hehe)

Anyway! So over mothers day weekend I helped her Paint the coop! She picked the colors, and they are a lot of fun and very bright!
The entire coop was built out of recycled materials we picked up for free from the recycling center here in town (including the paint), with the exception of the wire which was purchased and the windows which came from a camper at an old junk yard!

Let me know what you think!

Love, love, love! Love the colors. Love the use of FREE & FOUND materials. Love the design. Hubby loves the low budget concept a LOT!

We have a ReBuildIt center in our town, but nothing there is free. Not even close. Even though it's all donated materials, they are obviously in business to make money. I wouldn't say the prices are very economical on most of the stuff I've looked at so far, which is very disappointing. Did find some decent shingles for 35 cents each. Hmmmmm

My next move is to post some want ads on our FreeCycle group and go door-to-door at some construction sites. Hoping to scrounge up at least 1/2 of my materials on the low-end of the dollar scale, but not holding my breath.

The clock is ticking as the chicks are a month old already and have outstayed their welcome in our living room.

You should try talking to some local businesses about wood pallets. Most businesses are willing to sell the wood pallets their products were shipped on and you can get the good quality ones, pull the boards apart do some sanding and there ya go! You have some good quality wood to use! my mom uses wood pallets to make all sorts of projects.

+1

I scanned Craigslist for "pallets" and came across a post for some at a craft distiller near me, when I went to look there was someone outside and I asked if I had the correct pile to pick from. He said yes I did and the pile is always there as they store their barrels on pallets and if one board breaks they scrap them. took a bit of work to disassemble them and clean up the boards but free is free. Wished I had thought about pallets before I started my construction, but at least I got them before I was finished so was able to use them for some of the construction and saved some $$$.
