New Corrected Recipe for homemixed feed

Yes grain percentages can vary some from field to field depending on the nutrition (N-P-K) in the field.
As for the protein of oats the safe bet is that most is going to be around 12% protein.

Oats grain - 13% Crude Protein
Oats groats - 18% Crude Protein
Oat Middlings - 17% Crude Protein

Pumpkin Seeds - 14.3/14.4% Crude Protein ( http://elkhorn.unl.edu/epublic/live/g2036/build/#target3 )

Sunflower Seed De-hulled is right around 24.3% Crude Protein ( from Striped Sunflower Seed )

BOSS (Black Oil Sunflower Seed) can range from 12 - 16 percent protein
Sunflower Seed Meal Solvent - 38% Crude Protein
Sunflower Seed Meal with Hulls - 31% Crude Protein
Sunflower Seed Hulls - 4% Crude Proein

Thanks Chris, you are quite helpful, as always! The pumpkin seeds I found were labeled as 9g protein, per 30g serving, which comes out to 30% protein...they were organic, and human eating grade...maybe that makes a difference?

So many ins and outs of this whole feed making thing! That's why i am doing my research before I start, lol.

Thank you for the link- I bookmarked it for later reading!

I have found for pumpkin seeds on internet a protein % of 31%, AND FOR NONDEHULLED SUN SEEDS 16% (in caps is edited because I looked it up again and found a better source that jives with y'all). Previously I thought sun seeds had 28% protein- had found a website with it).

I have stopped the dehulled seeds and just feed nondehulled now.

Legumes: I know I should be a good chicken mama and give them some. I have been looking on craigslist at some ground peas they have for sale occasionally. I'm giving them a break from split peas since they despise them so much, and I find them ALL over the ground, gone the next a.m. as the mice clean them up.

Hopefully WW can elaborate on what she sees missing.. Maybe a lack of meat? Methionine? The Sunflower seed you have may be enough, it is a good source of it.

Lysine?, which is in corn and peas, which you do not have alot of either in... (Why I keep bringing up the peas...)

I will look good quality commercial feed like countryside naturals and the ratios they have the grains you want in, then compare the amino acid profiles of the grains and seeds you have.

It is rough and crude but with an "eye" or good "gut" instinct you can come pretty close.

So the other thing I have found thanks to you all is that my recipe is off due to the calculation of sunflower seed protein percent as 28 when in fact it is just 16%.

Thank you all for your advice!!! ......off to calculate new recipe with input so far

back!

Here is my brand new recipe:
And yes, I know I need ground peas here eventually....

27 parts red wheat x 14%=378
14 parts millet x 11%= 154
27 parts alfalfa meal x 17%= 459
27 parts pumpkin seeds x 31= 837
14 parts organic cracked corn x 7%= 98
27 parts rolled oats x 16%=432
27 parts BOSS x 16%= 432
14 parts Nyjer thistle seeds x 20% = 280

Total right= 3070
total parts= 150
3070 divided by 150 =

20.5% protein!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
