That's what I was thinking Amy. I had one like that, not quite that extreme, but it healed within a few (maybe 3?) days. I put Neosporin (without painkiller!!) on it a couple of times. Just make sure there is nothing rough for it to drag it on.

No. The chick we lost was acting normal all day & died in the night. The other 4 were fine. And the duckling hatched & looked healthy. It had even dried already.

I see a lot of gooy stuff on it perhaps this is. Why is hasn't shrunk up yet. I would get a warm wet qtip and get as much of the gunk off, as much as possible.

Thank you. Any info is appreciated since this is our first time hatching eggs. We lost 1/5 chicks (at 24hrs old) and 1/7 ducklings (at 2 hrs old). Breaks my heart even though I know it happens.

I had this on a chick my last hatch the chick was under developed. after reading your post I think Amy and WV are right this is the cord .which leads me to believe that your incubation is off some how not sure If it's the temp. or humidity or both. Its really more common for chicks not to hatch than to hatch and die. before you hatch again clean your Incubator with a one to three part mix of bleach and water use distilled water use a cheap spray bottle from the dollar store the mix rates are on the bottle use a damp cloth to clean the heating element and around all electrical parts. change your egg supplier and check your thermometer and hygrometer for proper function .I don't think the heart break ever gets better but hatch's do so try again you'll get there.

Sorry for the late reply, I hope it's not too late. While not normal, the open navel and protruding yolk are not an uncommon complication. Low incubation temps or too much humidity during incubation are common causes. Prognosis is very good if you can avoid infection.

good evening I see you've had a busy day too. makes sense to me . my humidity has been high the last two hatch's .
