My two Silver Phoenix have been laying for about 2-3 weeks and one of them started with a soft shell but then I was finding hard shells. I always find the hard shells in the nest box and it’s not everyday which I’ve read is normal for Phoenix’s. Two days ago I found a soft shell right outside the coop, it was broken, I thought one of my polish girls started to lay. Yesterday I got 2 eggs within an hour in the nest box and today I got one egg in the nest box. While I was working on my third coop today my one Phoenix was at my feet standing with her wings out from her body and slightly squatting, I bent down to see her and saw an egg coming out but already torn, it was soft, and then the yolk dropped out after. Is this something I should be concerned about? I know she has laid hard shells in the nest box, the two phoenixes lay different shapes that you’ll see in the picture. Here is a picture of the soft shell and the two different shapes I normally find each day they lay.

I would give some human calcium for several days to a week to see if her egg sheels harden. 1/2 tablet daily is good. Are your chickens eating layer feed and do they have crushed oyster shell available? Having an egg break inside can increase chances of infection. Some people use antibiotics (such as amoxicillin, and Baytril) to lessen the risk, but most antibiotics are not approved for poultry or egg layers. So that would be up to you. Have you seen any signs of a respiratory virus, such as infectious bronchitis which causes sneezing? IB can cause reproductive problems and abnormal egg shells.

My new layers were laying eggs that were just membranes no shell, one broke as well while it was coming out. I gave them some crushed up egg shells and dumped their water that had ACV in it and replaced it with fresh water. They all laid normal the next day. They have been good for about a week now with no soft eggs. Think sometimes their systems just need to work out the kinks.

I'd keep a close eye on her to ensure she doesn't get an infection, but same happened to mine and she's fine.

I’ve been feeding them Nutragena All flock with Oyster shells always available in a separate dish. She hasn’t shown any signs of sneezing, I’m outside with them most of the day and she is my shadow so I would have noticed any weird sounds from her. I don’t have any antibiotics should I go to the feed store to get some and start some as a precaution?

Were the crushed egg shells for some added calcium? I could give them some for breakfast in the morning.. I really hope she is just working out the kinks, I’m so paranoid of any of them catching something and I miss it till it’s to late :(

Yes, I give them crushed up egg shells daily for added calcium. They get layer feed that has calcium too, sometimes they just need an added boost especially the new layers.
