Why DONT you want an animal from the shelter?

because some people have young children at home and cant afford to bring home a cute sweet puppy and have it turn into something totally unsuitable for them because "opps we have no idea what this mutt is lets call it this" or have an older dog act out or be unsuitable because of mental issues in a home full of young children.

your afraid of a flame fest? well here you go, I hate animal shelters, they are for the most part worthless. they go and try and rehabilitate

or cure animals that deserve to be put down for their own well being and that of everyone around them. In my opinion 99% of all animals that enter a shelter should be put down. the very healthy very young animals that wont cost tons of money and time to heal, rehabilitate and find homes for should be fixed and then put up for adoption.

spending time and money trying to retrain a vicious adult dog with mental or health issues or save a litter of healthy pups that can easily go into new homes quickly. see my point? save money, save lives, make sure that the animals have forever homes not temp ones because 99% of people looking to adopt cant handle problem dogs with major issues. they want the sweet lovable family pet.

also I am drasticly against the govnerment taking away MY rights and privilages as an american. there already are laws in place to prevent inhumane puppymills neglect and torture. this asinine law will only push the criminals further underground and cause more neglect torture and abuse, not less. I am all for more licensing to breed animals and even would approve of health and mental conditioning tests to be necessary to breed. cause ya know what? the GOOD breeders of healthy valuable animals are already doing that.

Wow. You must live in a very different world with that type of animal shelter. I've never heard of a shelter adopting out viscious animals or spending money to rehab them....they are a liability and put to sleep. I would never have anything but an adult dog that has been tested with kids. What resposible parent goes out and buys a puppy with small kids around? Maybe because you don't spend enough time training your new puppy is why it develops "mental issues"? You think all dogs in a shelter have issues and that's why they are there? The only ones with issues are the stupid people who either bred them or didn't do their responsible duty to educate themselves and train a dog properly. Or those who think it's nature's miracle to have a litter of puppies and when homes can't be found, dump them at a shelter for someone else to deal with. Most of the dogs I see pass through our shelter are victims of our poor economy, divorce, death/illness of owner, etc. It's the disillusioned people like yourself that cause the problem to begin with and forces the government to take such drastic action. I'm not a fan of government, but for cripe's sake, with the animal overpopulation problem we have today, someone with some sensibility should step in. I am definately PRO responsible breeder.....one who proves their animals by showing them, doing proper genetic/health testing, and placing them only in approved homes able and willing to take on it's needs.

I live in between two major citys, most shelter animals (here) are abused fight dogs that some very dumb shelters try and rehab. you do not know me, my back ground or my time spent training and raising my animals. if I cant commit to 100% training an animal properly I don't take it home. simple as that. so do not run and make assumptions based off your own opinions.

I have been very nearly mauled by shelters dogs. a friends dog that loved me to death and saw me constantly chased me on top of a car and tried to kill me when one day I came over in uniform. turns out the shelter "forgot" to mention the dog was abused by his cop owner and was re-homed later. when animal control and the cops had to be called it was not a fun fight trying to contain the dog nor did it end well.

my best friend got a "pure lab" puppy from a shelter. he might be part lab. so far and I am a 5'4'' adult his back is level with my chest and he can look me in the face. he is less then a year and we think he might be lab, pit, dane, mastif and god knows what else. super sweet dog but he would certainly be extremely unsuited for a family that was looking for a medium size family dog for their small back yard.

the few and far between decent shelters have raised the costs and rights of the animals so high up that no one in their right mind will "adopt" a shelter puppy for 6 hundred when they could buy a papered home raised, socialized and healthy breeder pup for less. now Im also talking about when breeders have a pet quality pup or two pop out of a for show litter and it goes fixed to a pet home.

I hardly call advocating animals health and best interests the village idiot. plain and simple if more unhealthy or unfit dogs are put down right away it saves drastic amounts of money spent on medical bills, training and housing that could all go into fixing and stopping the reproduction cycle.

Wow, what kind of shelters do you go to? I've done tons of foster care for dogs and cats, worked with rescue groups, etc., and I think I'm qualified to say that the VAST majority of animals that end up in shelters are wonderful animals with few, if any, major behavior issues. Almost all of them are safe around young children, other animals, and so on. Many are purebred, many are extremely friendly and well-trained and happy to please. Most shelter dogs and cats are just a victim of circumstances and were not turned in because they were vicious or anything of the sort. All of my foster animals have blossomed into wonderful individuals. In fact, the only one of my dogs or cats that is not a rescue and came from a breeder is the only one with any sort of behavior problem (not major, we're going to resolve the issue with a trainer soon).

Also, the shelters I've dealt with usually charge $10-50 for animals without altering/vaccines, and $50-125 for dogs and cats who have been altered and vaccinated. I'd hardly call that unreasonable...and I'm in Calfornia. We're an expensive state!

I'm sorry that you've had negative experiences with shelters, but just remember that not every animal that ends up in one has issues. Most are perfectly wonderful, sweet animals who just ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time. My corgi, Honey, came out of a dingy shelter where she was found as an adult stray, I paid $10 for her, and she is the greatest dog I could ever ask for. My foster puppy that I got out of the same shelter is a complete and total sweetheart, very smart, completely potty trained, and well socialized. All of my foster dogs except one didn't have a single aggressive bone in their bodies, and the one that did have some issues ended up being adopted by us because she was wonderful with people, just not with other dogs, and lived out her life with us.

Just out of curiosity how many posting here with such strong opinions have ever bred and raised a family of animals in an attempt to improve the breed?

Not surprisingly.... we could say the same for humans.

far cry different a human then even the most adorable puppy ever.

and dont get me wrong, id love to save heal rehab and find homes for every dog and cat out there. but the money is just not there. if the population was reduced drastically threw only the best of the best breeding and everything else getting fixed we wouldn't be in this mess.

silver-
honestly the shelters are bad, underfunded, understaffed, extremely badly run by management. the quality of dogs coming in is also not the best because of location. the "in" thing in the city's around here are big nasty vicious pit/chow style dogs. the bigger the dog must mean the bigger who knows what in the owner lol. the other percentage is dogs given up because of financial hardship, many with extensive health issues. well behaved sweet hearts are the rarity

This law will hinder honorable, legitimate breeders while doing nothing to hinder the individual that keeps a female on a chain in the backyard, allows her to be bred and dumps the pups where? The shelter. Legislation will never stop ignorance or neglect.

we have no dog because our kids are tiny and i dont have the time to train. the paint mare was sold to someone else to breed/ride for the same reason. of my chickens i wont hatch the hatchery orps eggs. i bought and am raising some bbs from show quality parents. the eggs and chicks will be going to local 4hers because lately the 4hers have been showing back yard mutts or whatever they can get at the feed store.
