can you send it to me via email so i can post it on a different site? they can contact you with questions, not me, but i think it is good info that if we can , should share.

Oxford area isn't that far from mid-coast as the crow flies. Chickens might take a little longer but still very doable.

Well the cabin fever should be setting in soon here. Low temps and the waterfowl season ended here yesterday. What to do? I did take the first small step toward chicken raising, I bought a heat lamp and fixture yesterday for my future flock. I'm a first timer and will be getting chicks this spring. I actually took the kids to the feed store just to hang out (and buy the lamp), so the excitment should be building. Hang in everyone...

Hi Bill, glad you are getting the chicks this spring, you will love it.
Have you checked out the grain store in Hanson yet?
I know you are closer to Fitts Mill in Scituate but the one in Hanson ( Hanson Grain) is bigger and they have more. Its weird because they are the same owners but the prices can vary by a dollar or two on the grain.

The one at the hanover/pembroke line makes me crazy. Its so crowded and he only carries items that he agrees with. Like only medicated chick feed etc.

Where do you plan on getting your chicks? Any ideas what kind you are going to raise?

Hi Natalie, Hanson Grain is where I went. It is actually closer to me than Scituate. I have known about Hanson for some time.

Originally I was going to order chicks from Meyer but I think I will go through Hanson. I figure that any losses would fall on their shoulders and I wouldn't have to deal with that situation direcrtly with a hatchery.

I plan on getting all hens for eggs and will go with a variety. Probably 3 of each of Barred rocks, White rocks, Black Australorps, New Hampshire reds and Buff Orpingtons.

What I need is for this weather to break so I can break ground for the coop.

I'm not a big fan of North River feed either. Just getting back out onto rt 53 is reason enough to keep me away.

Those are good choices for chicken breeds, they do well in our area.
You can always pick up some colored layers, like the easter eggers for the kids too at some point if you want.
Believe me, its never hard to find more chicks. I have more than I had thought I would get but they are so much fun to have around.
I have a rhode island red that keeps sneaking in my house.
The kids come in and out of the house and she must just be squeezing past them.
I know she does it to me when I try to go in or out, she sits by the back door.
My husband whistles for the dogs to come in and she comes running with them every time. Its actually pretty funny. She goes right into the pantry to have a drink of water with them.
Yesterday my son yelled to me from his room upstairs and told me he heard a chicken on the steps(he is recovering from knee surgery and couldn't get up to check)
Sure enought there she is halfway up the steps to his room.
I brought her right outside. Later on my daughter comes into the kitchen carrying little red out of the house yet again. I said where did you find her and she said, she was watching tv in the living room.

You'll have some fun with the Bill...........
