Wow, old thread. I completely misread the sentence two years ago... I didn't see the word 'work' - I was thinking owning. I don't know if it's illegal to 'work' (called ferreting) ferrets in the US, it is in some other countries. It is illegal to 'own' ferrets in several states (California is one) in the US. Some states require special permits to own them or proof of vaccinations.
