Hello all,
We are a family of 5 who love healthy living and furry friends. So we decided to become urban farmers, so to speak. We built a coup and have a large garden in our modest backyard. As of March we became the proud owners of 6 sweet little chickens. We have 3 Easter Egger Hens and 2 Lemon Cuckoo Orpingtons, 1 is a hen and 1 roo. We had another Easter Egger that turned out to be a rooster. He was gorgeous but became very possessive over the hens and coop. After he attacked my daughter and I, he became dinner. Now everyone is happy, friendly, and living in peace. Four days ago we found our first egg. It had a bluish green tint, so it must of been from Coconut, one of the Easter Eggers. The yolk was so orange and had so much flavor. We have been told that its because we allow them to free range. The flavor is especially noticeable when we did a side by side taste comparison with the store brand eggs. We were absolutely amazed. We expected it to be better but we had no idea just how special it would be. Love it! We also have a bunny and a chicken herding pit bull mix named Mojo. He helps keep the chickens out of the house. We have a screen door that the previous owner cut a doggy door out of. The chickens like to come up the stairs and squawk at us for treats. Hence the name beggingbirds. Corn on the cob, zucchini, and watermelon are there favorites. They also like oats and sunflower seeds, but they have to share those with our bunny. Hope your having as much fun as we are here in Ohio.
