Hello BSChick. I too live in Blue Springs, MO (and I just created this account to respond on this thread, lol).

Feldman's in Blue Springs has always sold baby chicks for as long as I can remember. (I actually worked there about 6 years ago and had to take care of the feathery little things every spring).

However, as far as I know, it's still not legal to raise them in city limits. Someone correct me if I'm wrong (please let me be wrong, I want chickens!)

For now I raise rabbits instead. Blue Springs doesn't have any ordiances against raising rabbits as long as you stay within your limit of adult rabbits. (I think you can have up to 4 adults before it's considered a breeding operation which would require a permit) With just two does and a buck (2 females and 1 male) I can produce around ~80 rabbits per year for the freezer. That comes in at nearly 240lbs of white meat annually, assuming each butchered rabbit weighs about 3 lbs each.

...unfortunately rabbits don't lay eggs, so I'm still S.O.L. on that one :'(

Hello to all,

I too reside within the city limits of Blue Springs Mo, near as I can tell there is no change in this matter, as our local municipality and fascist codes administration refuses to let "red blooded free thinking american individuals", practice any level of of self sustainability.

At the start of this year I figured it would be a good plan to plant my new garden, and raise some chickens and rabbits.

For a few reasons

1. Being less dependent on the local "Price chopper IE: supermarket, for the non-locals". It is my personal belief that we Americans are far to dependent on many of the modern conveniences that constantly surround us, and people often wonder why it is other countries around the world call us fat, and lazy Americans.

2. It would be a good activity for my family and I, and help teach my children skills that most grown adults lack.
Face it how many American's can honestly say, they have any type of knowledge raising, butchering, and gathering their own food, " gotta love how disconnected we are".

3. Knowing what is in my families food and just were it came from.
You hear about it in the news from time to time, about how some type of food borne illness takes out another group of people because somewhere between the farm to you, whatever you may have consumed became tainted somehow.

If you ask me, what my local municipality should be sued, frankly I feel what they are is doing should be criminal, and they are just helping to further strip, and degrade God given American rights that myself, my family, and others that reside within my local community should be able to enjoy. Last I checked we are still living in America!!!

Here is the only information that I have been able to find for the local area I live in, Keep in mind it is dated 2010
So changes may have taken place since.

I bid you all a good day.

I know it's been a long time since this thread was made and since anyone posted but I currently live in Blue Springs and am getting some chicks this year. Luckily my boyfriend lives in KC and has some land where will be keeping them.I think it's important people relearn how to support them selves and there is absolutely no harm in letting someone have 4 chickens in their back yard.
The reason I'm posting is I'd like to know how I can help out in getting this changed?

I am not really sure how to go about getting laws changed. I would imagine you need to consult your local town hall to discuss how to go about that. But you might start here in this section of BYC...

Also, this thread is loaded with people such as yourself looking to change laws...

Good luck!

Blue Springs people I'm new to BYC and want to know if any of you are still active on this board. I have started researching other local cities and will be approaching our council members and other city officials to get our ordinance changed. To be quite honest, after speaking to not only a city representative but an Animal Control Officer as well, I was able to stump them on their own laws because of how poorly they are written. If any of you are still here and willing to help me, I'd appreciate all the help and support I can get!
