sorry about your loss

ugh this whole thread is so depressing. i agree, i wish we'd waited until April to have our chicks arrive, but maybe I'll get lucky and they'll all arrive safely on Friday morning peeping up a storm.

Have you tried greek yogurt or poly-vi-sol? We bought both to have on hand for our chicks, and I'm going to boil up some eggs tonight to have on hand as well. I'd try the poly-vi-sol directly into the mouth of the suffering chick - I've heard amazing things about how well it works.

I will have to try that. The others seem to me doing well and moving around alot and eating, this is the one I was worried about, it was so tiny.

I know the cold weather isnt very good for them. But I dont know that that is the only reason for the losses. I did have mine vaccinated. Which I have never done before.

Did anyone else have vaccinations done? Sometimes they can be hard on them too. But after my chickens got Cocci last year I wanted to prevent it just in case. I also got the mareks vaccine.

Mine are now 11 days old, and some of them have wing feathers, the start of tail feathers, and they have started "dust bathing" in the wood chips! Just like tiny little miniature chickens. Loving my peeps!

So sorry to read about the losses. Even if you order in spring, they say to expect a couple losses. I have family that ordered back in the day (the 50's and 60's) and they expected a 5-10% loss. At least the rate of loss is generally better these days.

In our area, we're past the last frost. The date of arrival was actually our average last frost day. I didn't think much about the cold. Of course, I didn't expect the Snowpocalypse to hit this winter. I'd have just gone the feed store route, but the feed store didn't expect to be able to get any until March. Hind sight is 20/20. Either way, the four girls I have left are pretty hardy, and they're doing well. The feedstore girlies are great as well.

If you give them a cookie sheet with dust/a little DE/ a few ashes/ and some sand, they will have the air full of dust almost immediately. Mine love it. I think I gave them the dust bath at about 2.5 weeks.

I think my rare bird is next. My little Polish is NOT doing well. Acting the same as the turken did yesterday.

I dont get it! He was one of the most active ones when i brought them home!
