Hey Hollytree10! My babies are growing so fast. I intended to get 4 and ended up with ten.( That crazy chicken math lol) My babies are into a 12' X12' pen now. I used the brooder/coop my dad and I made a few weeks back in the pen as well. That's where they go at night. Last night was the first night every single one went up on their own. Most nights I have had to put up at least 4 or 5. I was thrilled. As far as I can tell now, I ended up with 9 hens and 1 roo from my straight run bunch. I have pairs of two and five different breeds including Australorps, Production Reds, Barred Rock, Black Jersey Giants and Easter Eggers. Each one has a name except the Black Jersey Giants. They were my youngest and I just call them "The Twins" My favorite is one of the Australorps that I named Ethel (and yes, one of my production reds is named Lucy). Ethel was always the most outgoing. She would come to me when the others would not. They are getting better. I try to go out there once or twice a day just to sit and take them a treat that they can eat from my hand. One day I think Ethel was jealous that the others were eating so she jumped up in my lap. I am really anxious for the time when they will be laying eggs for me. From the sound of it, I will have many more than I need so I may be selling the extras. I hope you love yours as much as I love mine. I really wanted some Buff Orpingtons as well. They look as if they have a beautiful reddish beige colour. Where did you get your babies? I got mine from a local feed store and two of mine came from the co-op. I wonder where the co-op gets theirs? I wonder if it's from someone local or from a hatchery? I know the feed store got theirs from a hatchery but not sure which one. So lovely to have you here. Please keep in a touch and let us all know how you are coming along with your babies and buildling your coop.
