Sponsored Post New Giveaway: Try out the Southern States Poultry Pal App for a chance to win!

I have had this app for a few months now on my iPhone. I got it when I first got my chicks in February. I LOVE it. I love the egg tracker even though i can't use it yet. I have pics of all my chickens in there so i can keep track of each one. It really helps so you can keep track incase a hen stops laying and you can keep any eye on her. The one thing i really wish they could do is to ADD MORE BREEDS. :) I have a mixed flock of more rare, heritage, fancy breeds. (i call them my yard candy) Unfortuanly most of them are in the "other" category. Other than that, I love the app and plan on using it daily once the girls start to lay.

I like it....it seems as if it's still in development though. Here are my suggestion for the app:

Manage My Flock section:
- Don't require I fill in every section
- Provide a calendar under the Hatch Date section rather than a scrolling bar to pick the date (I had to look at a calendar to determine hatch date)
- Breed Type doesn't have every breed in it. It doesn't even have every breed you list in that Breed section of your app. Let us type in the breed if we choose "other"

Chicken Guide section - Chicken Breed subsection:
- List them alphabetically by breed. For instance, you list "Cochin" which is good - perhaps a sub section for blue, black etc. But for Seabrights you list them as "Golden Seabright Bantam". I have Silver and Golden Seabrights so it would make sesnse to simply list "Seabrights" and then within that page maybe you could list all the "flavors" like golden, silver, etc.
- Provide pictures of each breed (Houdan doesn't have a pic....I've included one of my roo baby if you'd like to use him
smile.png
)
- Provide a feedback link in each breed type for owners to provide you with info you might want to include

Chicken Guide section - Articles subsection
- have a search bar to enable searches by topic

Gallery section
- Provide some way to enable us to quickly skim past the photos we have already seen. Like a scroll to top or scroll to bottom button.
- Sort by breed or sex or age or region or something

It would be nice to have some way to connect with other chicken friends in my area. Perhaps a Connect! section where you can input your zip code and have a chat room or forum with other folks in the same area....

I look forward to using my app more when my girls start laying!

Thanks!

I've tried playing with this app since I downlaoded it. Given that it won't display properly I cannot guage it properly. On an android phone it is a waste of space and not available on kindle. I'm withdrawing from the contest because I'm not willing to mess with it for a full week. Much better off with a notebook and pen.

OK, most has already been mentioned, but although I would have been extremely excited had I just gotten my first chickens, I don't find it very useful for those of us who have been around for a long time. Especially those who breed or show. There's nothing there for us. The app lacks every single breed or variety that I own, so 16 breeds and I know plenty of others that will have the same problem with their breeds. For the average backyard chicken owner I can see it, so maybe that's the purpose. After all this is BYC, so that makes since, but I can think of no less than 50 people who started with a few hatchery chicks or feed store chicks of the breeds listed here and commonly purchased, that are now into breeding, preserving, showing or just collecting some of the more unusual and uncommon birds, or actually common, but not what you get at a hatchery. I love the idea Sally had about numbering the pens. Bravo! Even that could help if every bird you own is an OTHER. That is unless you have a project going on in which case it wouldn't help. I was unable to add even a name of a bird. I tried. And then I tried again and again. Basically I couldn't put a chicken together. LOL A hatching record for most of us is a must! Weighing, candling, non developing, developing...An area to keep track of the hatches and a way to record humidity level and temperatures and any fluctuations and a date to list them. .This is just some of what is needed. I had the same problem as some others where a picture wouldn't show up. Still trying to get it to do something for me. It's only been 24hrs, so I actually have 6 days to figure out if there's another way around things.

I like the graphic design of the APP, It's simple and clean looking. I also really like that ability to add a photo from my photo library and not being forced to snap a shot with my phone, although the pop-up for that option shouldn't be under "capture" because at first I thought my only option was to snap a shot. It should say "capture" to open the camera and snap a shot or "upload" to use a photo in your library. Or just "select source" right off the bat instead of that "capture" button.

Most of my breeds aren't even listed in the directory. I have true Ameraucana's [ would be good to have an Easter Egger option as well] and Olive Eggers (yes, I realize those are crosses where there are many variables) and the breeds it DOES have, it doesn't have the color type. For instance we have a light Brahma, but the only option is Buff Brahma. Either a broader description by just having "Brahma" or have a subcategory for "Light Brahma" or "Buff Brahma" within that breed. I had the same problem with the Orpington. It says "Buff Orpington", well we have a blue orpington, not a buff....

Oh, wait... the light brahma option is there, but it's so far away from the others I didn't know it. Basically they just need to be organized better. Color options need to be in a sub-category.
Why there are so many color options for certain breeds and some other common breeds, like Marans, aren't listed is a bummer.

The biggest factor keeping me from using this app a lot is that it only works online. I don't have a data plan on my phone so I can only access it when I'm near wifi and being in the country/forest I'm just out of the wifi zone so we don't have internet at home rendering the app basically useless to me which is too bad because I'm really liking it so far!

Oh, ack... It just crashed on me for the second time and quit.

Are the photos submitted to the gallery screened somehow or it is a live feed of chickens? I submitted one, but I don't see it anywhere.

I pretty much agree with everyone else. The Design and layout is awesome, and I love how there is a manage your flock option, and that you can add pictures of each chicken to it. They do need more breeds but I'm sure they are working on it. Also, in the breeds menu under each breed, instead of just having a short paragraph about it they should add a table saying their

-Temperment
-Egg size
-Egg Color
-Egg Frequency
-Temperature hardiness
-Colors (Feathers, Legs)
-Ear tufts, mufts
-Comb and waddle size and type
-etc.

Otherwise its a pretty awesome app.

Agreed! And maybe even any health issues and if medications they've ever been treated with.
