Hey there!! My Dad surprised my Momma and I with a small chirping box from tractor supply today! I’m obviously always giddy when he shows up with that beautiful small box, but this time I was not prepared for what it had inside!! When I opened it, there were three yellow critters, 2 much larger than the third. He got geese! Well, 2 geese and one duck (someone left a single duck at TSC, so they put him in with the geese! Now he lives with us!)
Anyways, apparently, it’s a white layer duck (is this different from a Pekin?) and 2 White Chinese Geese!

Here’s the thing… I know NOTHING about geese! We have chickens, and Praise The Lord, have had them for years and years, and we’ve kept ducks off and on for going on 6 years… but never ever a goose! I’ve wanted one, but shyed away from them because I didn’t know how to take care of them, or anything at all about them. So I welcome any and ALL information you helpful people have!! We currently have 3 older ducks (about 4ish months old)
So I do need to know how ducks and geese do living together, and what I need to feed them, both now as babies and later.

When can I introduce these guys to the established ducks?
Can baby duck continue to be raised with his baby goose friends?

Y’all, I am clueless here and don’t mind to admit it!!
I know that’s a lot of questions, but any and everything you can answer or would like to add, I am all ears!
Thanks for reading my long post!

Y’all have a blessed day!!

Honestly, if you're not prepared and have a sizeable set up, I'd reccomend rehoming.
I don't want to be a downer but these are animals you don't take lightly.
I appreciate the thoughts! It is not something Willy nilly, we’ve wanted geese for a while now! But everyone has to start somewhere 😊 This is for learning, and that is why I came to this forum, not just to be careless.
We have the ducks in a large area, so as long as they can live together, there is plenty of room, otherwise, we have other structures for them, but Lord’s Willing, I’d love to see them all together!

Hello! And welcome to the world of geese! :)

I have 1 gander, and we raised him with our chickens and he's been a wonderful flock guardian for us. We also had a duck for about a year before she unfortunately passed away. My duck was a lot younger than my gander, and so they never really got along, but I assume geese and ducks can cohabitate fairly easily if they're similar in age. As for feeding, waterfowl diet would be best, though I highly recommend supplementing with niacin- especially for the geese. Also, if you want them to be friendly, LOTS of cuddles for the goosies... it'll help save you from a lot of painful bruises and bites later lol. I'll also tag some people who are better versed in geese and ducks than I. Best of luck!

Hi!! I’m so excited, this new world sounds like so much fun!! Thanks for the welcome!!

I’m sorry about your duck 😞 We’re all too familiar with the never easy experience of a critter passing.

Thank you for the information, and for tagging the other goose lovers! I’m especially happy to hear your goose is a good guardian! I would love that!!

Now when you recommend the extra niacin, is that only if mixing too, say an all flock mix, or is that even with waterfowl specific food? (I,e, our local feed store has 40lbs bags that are for ducks…) would that need extra niacin too?

We were feeding our gosling waterfowl specific feed, but he still needed the extra niacin boost since he had wobbly legs. Nutritional yeast was a really affordable way to supplement that. Just mix it in with the feed :)

Perfect!! Do you have a brand of nutritional yeast you would recommend?
