New Hampshire!!

Hi,

I have a broody Cochin that hatched out 5 chicks three weeks ago. They were born on Mother's Day. 3 EE's and 2 Black Copper Marans. They all have feathered legs. How old can they be before I can give them away? I don't want to upset mama hen but they are getting very active and space is limited.... my older hens want to peck at them.

Very cute! You can give them away at any age, as long as the person you give them to is prepared to take care of them properly (i.e. give supplemental heat if the nights are cool still and they are young enough to need it). I can usually get away with taking away all supplemental heat by 7 weeks of age, though this time of year you may be able to push it even younger, since the weather is turning quite mild.

I would think it wouldn't be that traumatic for the mama, I had a broody duck who hatched ducklings and we gave them away once they were feathered and she was upset, but not badly and she got over it fast, in a few days. An upset hen for a day or two is a little better than pecked at chicks in my opinion.

Yeah they do get over it pretty quickly. I think the key is to remove the chicks completely from the hen. I separated some once but intended to keep the chicks. The mom was still within earshot of the chicks, they were in the next coop over. The momma hen fussed and fretted so much because she could hear her babies peeping to her. I had to move them further away, and then she settled right down.

Here are some pics of the roos I am looking to rehome. First one is an Olive Egger and second one is a sultan x polish both big boys! Hatched Feb 1st.. Pics are about 4 weeks old. Can text more recent pics if needed but camera on the fritz.
