Just sos you know... hay can grow mold.... That's why I don't use it in my coops.

But if hay is what you want... contact your local farmers.

Plus hay doesn't really hold it w/o having these 10" needles sticking out all over in different directions, Thanks to your hens stepping on their poop and it's stuck in the straw. Your trying to get into a container and they knock on something and your stuck picking up another mess. Try sand if you don't like shavings.

I tried hay once in the coops. Did not work out well at all, I prefer the shavings. I also tried it on the ground, not in the coop, in one pen and straw in another to try to see if if would help with the muddy pens during the winter and never again it stunk and was awful to remove. If you are planning on using deep litter it won't work with that method. It will probably go moldy like Renie'sPeeps says. If you don't want the shavings some folks like sand. I've not tried it myself but I did put up some poop boards/shelves under some of the roosts to see if that would help with the amount of poop on the floor and I like it.

Just my .2 cents.... I also tried hay a few years ago. Yuck is all I have to say. Not a good bedding at all.

I also do not use hay for bedding or nestboxes. I prefer pine shavings.

I might try those poop boards... yep I have a strong constitution so it shouldn't bother me much. Anybody else having bug problems this yr in the coop??
