New Hampshire!

I just got an email back and they didn't mention the grant. But will call in July and see if I can make an appointment. The $25 is nothing, but with the milleage from concord and back is about $75 so total... I dont really want to pay that much if ibdont have to. Not all my birds will be 6 months old, but the vast majority will be, and I'll be trying to buy from certified flocks so that I won't have to worry so much for next year. I started out buying from pretty much anyone, so I am a little worried.

I certainly don't want to ship, I have awful luck, so that probably wouldn't end well. And I dont want to drive really far, I think I'd do a 50 mile radius at max for eggs. I'm lazy about driving :p thanks for the offers! But if anyone closer has barred rock, definitely let me know. My neighbor wants some too, and he's been doing SO much work for us I figure that's an easy way to pay him, since he doesn't want money. So probably two dozen eggs would be good. I'd only need maybe a half dozen of Cayuga eggs and another half dozen of Swedish, again, if anyone local has any available :)

Not Barred rocks but if you are wanting good barred layers, There is a breeder of VERY nice Dominiques in Plainfield.

Hi Everyone! I am new to BYC and one year into keeping guineas with some more guineas and some barred rocks in the incubator right now. I'm in Madbury and I'll let you know if i have any extras after my keets and chicks hatch.

Nice to meet you all and know I have good resources close by.

Is there anyone within driving distance of Whitefield NH that could come help me? I've had a bad bear attack, door on coop is demolished, I stepped on some huge nails and drove them into my left foot and this morning can't walk. I stepped on the nails in the dark last night trying to nail the boards back on the door. The bear has been here 3 times total that I know of and I have lost at least 5 birds so far. I think. I have issues walking anyways, and didn't even feel the nails go in until I saw the blood. Called the cops twice too and they gave me the number for F&G.

The bear has been at the coop the past two nights, I already fixed the door twice, before driving the nails in my foot last night. I have 10 I think? left, The birds are loose and I have no way to contain them, as I can NOT walk or get them gathered and feed and watered. The coop door is splintered. I have a circular saw, wood and nails, just can NOT walk at all.

Going to call fish and game as soon as they open, as the bear is now not afraid of me and could harm others. There is a person that is local that federally can trap, just need to get number from F&G and find out how this works.

Also need to go to the hospital but can't just leave the birds loose.....

PLEASE?????

Thank you if you can help, if not, I do understand I am so far north it might not be possible!

Thank GOD the new birds are still in the house in the brooder boxes!!!! I don't know what I am going to do....I might not be able to have birds here....

The bear does not come during the day, only at night. Just so you know, I would not ask for help if there was any danger from it.

The cop said if something isn't done, the bear could break into my cabin coming after the feed and other young chickens, if she finishes off the ones left...if any ARE left after wandering all around like they are.

I had to put up an electric fence..... has to be strong enough.... slide a piece of bacon all over the wires before turning it on.... The bear will use his nose to sniff the bacon smell and get a shock of a life time... he WILL back off. Wished I could help :(

Don't be fooled.. If he is coming in at night... he is very close by.... eventually he WILL come in the day time as well..... I have lots of experience with them myself.

Thanks Renie'sPeeps! Called the Fish and Game and Game Warden came over with a Federal Biologist. The electric fencing is up all around the coop and run. Three strands with a piece of tinfoil with peanut butter on it, so she/he will smell it and get a zap. They also put up a motion sensor really loud sound device near the end of my porch, as the chicks are in the house as well as the feed, so if the bear can't gain access to the coop, it MIGHT try the house. Once this trial is done there will definitely be electric fencing out there after also. Just have to save a tad to get it, but it's going to be a while before anything for sure can be determined so will work out. Thank God, He had things keep going wrong for me putting the new chicks out.

Yeah you are right on all accounts! A bear can and will, if hungry enough, tear into ANYTHING short of a shipping container or something similar and can on occasion, even tear through really strong electric fencing. All together, it came back 5 times in 48 hours. Really hoping this will work. They checked the top strip at the back and it was above 6000, can't remember how much more, but quite a bit. It's battery powered and will need batteries around 2 weeks but should last 3, I'm sticking with 2 weeks though. We will see. Since the bear actually took a swipe at me, last night, and left claw mark on my arm, if this doesn't work, they will have to trap her/him. I really hope the bear decides this is not a nice place anymore and moves on!!!!

They even brought a guy to fix the door, as I had stepped on nails in the dark last night and since I can't feel my feet ( from a bad car accident in 2002 and am considered a para ), I didn't know it was as bad as it is, until this am. Went to ER and got Cipro as have lines, so infected. Thanks for wanting to help, I really do appreciate that

I am really amazed at all the Fish and Game are doing to attempt to stop this predation, for free and indefinitely, until we are sure the bear and maybe family has moved on. I lost a rooster and 4 hens all together. The remaining ten, all hatchery birds, are doing ok considering and seem unhurt, just in shock. They are eating, drinking and no visible signs of injury. The Biologist checked one for me and even helped with the night feeding/watering and we got them locked in the coop early so I could soak the foot and get some sleep. I hope!

Was the hardest this am at 4:30 when the bear came back for the fifth time and I had to listen to my poor hen scream for almost 20 minutes until I could no longer hear her. The bear headed north, down the mountain, so if it is female and has cubs, they should be able to find them, if the need arises, with that info, or get close enough to trap the cubs. If this doesn't work, then they will trap Momma Bear here, and then go for the cubs at/near the den. Praying this works and moves her/them/him on into more natural habitat and away from people. That bear was NOT afraid of me at all!

I am so grateful for New Hampshire's Fish and Game, Local Game Warden, The two local police officers that responded, the friend of the Game Warden and the Federal Biologist! I couldn't have done this without their help! I can not walk from stepping on the nails. Those were really LONG nails I was putting in the door. Still didn't work with double boards on the door. The bear just went right through both of them anyway! Well, going to try to catch some sleep until the motion alarm goes off, as I know it will. NOT going out this time. The first officer really thought it was a person, maybe kids. I'm really not crazy enough to go out and holler at a bear in the dark of night! I really thought it was prolly kids also, pulling a really bad prank. Imagine my surprise when the "kids" turned out to be the head of a bear coming out of the coop after I hollered, " Get out of my coop"!

Pretty scary out their in the dark with a pen light, nailing the door back up all alone too! Especially after getting swiped by the bear. God was watching over me last night, that's for sure! If I hadn't had an issue with my ankle, ect from car accident and kinda tripped when trying to back away from the bear, that bear could've and would've done tons of damage!

All in all, even though I lost birds, it could've been wayyy worse. I hope people take this as a lesson for their own coops and bear proof them and the bottom line is, we really can't totally predator proof our coops, especially from a bear! It was a whole year for me, before a bear decided to break into that coop. It has double walls, double floors, double ceiling, double door, with wire in between.

Few more things I read as I was looking into bear attacks. Chicken food is like crack to bears and that is usually the draw in for them. Once they taste chicken, they will NOT stop coming back, bears eat all day and night from spring until fall to gain back the weight for hibernation. Bears can rip a door off a car and they are VERY intelligent. They can break into people houses, if they are hungry enough. Once a bear is no longer afraid of humans, the bear usually has to be put down as they can travel many miles to get back to their territory and will so relocation is not always a solution although it can be in certain circumstances.

This is a Northern Black Bear that did all this damage and even though they are not normally aggressive to humans, they can be.

Thank you sooo much for the support! I don't own a gun nor can I afford one right now. The really strange thing is the bear taking a swipe at me. Black Bears are usually very afraid of people. Unfortunately, some people feed them, especially after a winter like we had, and that means they are killing that bear. A bear that is no longer afraid of humans HAS to be put down.

Still very scary, and so far, unless I was too exhausted to hear it, the bear didn't come back last night. Really weird, unless the bear was the one screaming and not my hen? Maybe it stepped on the nails like I did and it's paw/paws hurt too much to come back right away? I know I can't really walk well and tending the chickens is brutal, but I am managing.

I just hope this system works, and maybe it did and I was just too beat to hear anything??? Time will tell and I really am amazed and grateful for how NH and all those people came out enforce to help and hopefully move the bear off into deeper wild country. I really don't want to kill the bear if it will move on and not hurt any more people BUT if it continues, there is no choice. If it has sore paws, it could be a week before it attempts chicken take out again.

I don't know, I just want this to end. I can't fight a bear. Any other predator, yes, but not a very hungry huge bear!!!

I didn't let the girls out today, as I had all I could do to get out there and feed and water them. A few days and my foot should be feeling better and they can go out in their run. They covered the run, the coop and the little temp coop I was building for the new chicks until they are a bit bigger. I wanted all to be in the same place...not really sure why...may intuition?

Thanks again and say a prayer, a good thought, what ever you do, for us and the remaining 10 girls! We are all still in shock!

So all 4 of the chicks I got at TSC turned out to be cockerels. And worse than that, they are not barred rock like they were listed, apparently they are sex links.

Anyone want them? Lol located in Newport
