This may not be the place for this question, but figured I'd throw it out there. I have a few hens of age and are getting real red, leading me to think they're going to be laying soon. I have the nesting boxes in with golf balls at the moment. I let my hens free range much of the day, and they enjoy hanging out in a spot in the woods in the back of my property. Now that they are in that window of time where they should be laying, should I be confining them in their coop/run more frequently to "train" them to lay in the coop, or is that something they will instinctively do? Any inout would be great, thanks

I would do what your doing cause my hens if I let them out to early they lay outside...

That's what I was thinking would be an easy fix, thank you.

On that note, I have 6 different breeds, but all within 2 weeks of age(18-20wk). With some laying potentially any day now, and others still having several weeks to go, given their breed, would people recommend continuing grower feed and offering oyster shell free choice for those ready to lay until everyone is laying? Would offering a feeder of grower and separate feeder of layer feed an option, or will they just eat whichever food they want to eat?

They'll eat whatever they feel like eating, at laying age there should be a separate free choice oyster shell available
