ventilation!! lots of it, no insulation needed but keeping moisture out is very important

Thank you! I do only have two BA's so I am a little worried about keeping them warm for the winter but I have heard moisture can be worse than the cold. Is there a good way to "measure" the moisture in the coop to be sure it is ventilated enough? It doesn't smell musty and I keep it clean and have plenty of shavings down to collect droppings. I try to change out the shavings once a week to be sure they are clean and dry.

you want it to be able to breath, do you have vents in it?
not near where they roost but youll want some

and any hygrometer would be able to read the humidity but i would worry about that too much, sounds like you keep it pretty dry

Yes we do have vents and they are higher above the roost so there aren't drafts on the chicks. Thanks for the input!!

I hope all made out well with the cold. We have one more really cold night tonight except it'll be without the strong winds. I find those nights a little more dangerous since even with ventilation you can dip down near saturation. The windy nights are no big deal (assuming there's no drafts on your birds in the coop) since the air stays mixed and dry.

Deep winter came in pretty quickly after a long stretch of mild weather so it's definitely a wake up call physically for the chooks. They'll adjust though.

Where do all of you bring your poop samples for fecal float tests? I've been going to Weare for $35, but I can't get a prescription unless I pay $80 with an actual bird visit.

i havent had one done but i am sure my vet would do it and i know the vet in Ashland does (northern lakes vet)

You can send me the poop..well dried and crumbly in a plastic baggy along with a $20 bill in another clean bag, and I will take a guess on whether they have worms or not....... TIPS are appreciated... My birds need feed.....
