New Hatchlings...(Tiny Has Grown Up Now....Update)

Did a cursory sexing of the Barred Rock chicks. Appears that five out of seven are pullets! Seems Fern and Becca each produced one male chick. Hope I'm right. When their wing feathers come in some, I'll be able to tell by the barring if I'm correct.

Boy, that would be great to get so many pullets! The pictures are beautiful, but the little chick looks "odd" even beyond just being small, doesn't it? I love your phrasing about being too precious for this world, what a lovely way to put it.

Well, Tiny is still not eating or drinking. From its reactions, or lack thereof, to things around it, you can tell she's going on hearing, not sight. Since she hatched on the 11th, she's probably got another day or so before she weakens and/or passes on.

Definitely looks like Failure to Thrive among the other issues it has, that does happen and it is sad, but it is life.

Aww Cyn! Dang it! I'm so sorry to hear that the little bitty one might not make it. I'm lighting a candle for him/her tonight. Hope that s/he improves, and if s/he can't make a turn around, I hope that the end is mercifully swift!

Poor little thing.

Sometimes I think it hurts more to lose a little one than an adult. The wee ones hold such promise, that when you lose them, you lose all of the "could have beens/might have beens" and we never get to know who this precious little soul could be!

Please keep us posted either way. You know we're all pulling for the wee one. And for you too!

She chirped half the night. I made a slurry with feed and honey water and tried to feed it with a syringe. She resists all attempts to get her to live and, right now, she's chirping loudly. I imagine that her yolk is now gone and she is quite hungry, but she won't eat or drink. May have to help her along. She so teeny, it's amazing.

I am so sorry to hear about tiny the other chicks are beauitful though. I sold all of my chicks except for two fav bantam pullets I miss them all. I have another hatch due soon though so thats alright. I love the ameraucana hope you get lots of pullets out of this batch.

Well, Tiny actually took a drink on her own, however, eating is still not something she can relate to, sadly. I know she's getting very hungry about now. If she took a drink, she may also start eating, but I'm not holding my breath. Even if she did, it may be too late for her. The rest are a rambunctious bunch of little heathens, though.

Keeping the candle lit Cyn. I so hope she pulls through. But, if she doesn't, I know it wasn't for lack of trying so very hard on you and Tom's part. Sometimes these things just go this way. Sad, very, very sad, but also very true.
