It sounds like there wasn't much of anything you could do, though, so try not to feel bad...
I'm really happy to hear that Tiny is doing well! I forgot to say, but one of my friends gave me a chicken once that was half the size of his siblings, and looked like he was half the age, too. She didn't think he'd make it or at least he'd be seriously stunted, so I took him to raise with a lone California quail I got in from my wildlife rehab group. The two bonded and became the best of friends. The quail would sleep in his feathers, and they'd eat together even though the chick was at least ten times the size of the quail.
When the chick outgrew the tank I had the quail in, I gave her back the chick. He grew, and grew, and grew, and now he's a BIG, handsome rooster named Lancelot! Much bigger than his siblings! She still brings him along to our wildlife rehab classes sometimes, introducing him as a "giant red quail".
The quail made it, too, and was released with a bunch of other quail!
Amazing how sometimes the ones you don't expect can pull through and become special birds.
Great story about the cockerel and his quail friend! Hope that is what happens with Tiny. She can be small if that's the way it is, as long as she lives and thrives.
**Rushes in, panting and out of breath** Sorry I'm late! What did I miss? Dang computer decided to crash on me yesterday morning and I'm just now getting back up and running........
OOOOH!!! Cyn! That's GREAT news on Tiny!!!
Awesome pictures lady!!! Awww!! Love that pic of the BLRW/Amer cleaning Tiny's face! That's just so cute! And oh my gosh! The BLRW cross is getting HUGE!! (we really do need to agree upon a name for that one!!
)
Sorry to hear you lost one unexpectedly. That always hurts, but there wasn't anything you could do about it. It's just life, and sometimes it ends abruptly and without any warning.
Just have to concentrate on those that remain and look to their future.
And Oh! What a future I predict Tiny is going to have!! A Little princess on the gilded throne!!
Cynthia, I am SO sorry you lost a baby- it does sound exactly like what happened to Superchick- one of those freak things that happen. They do play rough, the little rugrats!
On the other hand, it is so heartening to hear that Tiny is doing better, making friends, etc. I hope she surprises you, catches up and is your best egg layer ever.
Well, I usually don't name them till I know I'm keeping them and what the sex is. Most of these will be going to other homes after I pick my few keepers. That BLRW cross is going to be a pretty bird, I bet. After she told me about the possibility, I was actually hoping I'd get one! Sounded really pretty.
