We just received two, approximately one year old, Rhode Island Red hens. They arrived Tuesday evening. I can imagine that there should be an adjustment period before they start laying again. But we don't know what to expect. The first night they each laid a egg, one in a nesting box and one in the yard. Then nothing on Wednesday or Thursday. Then this morning I found a smooshed soft shell in one of the nesting boxes.
Is this normal for adjusting hens?
Next question, Yesterday we noticed that one of the hens foot has some swelling between their toes and on the bottom of the foot. It looks like there is a small scab on the bottom of her foot too. (or is that a pad)
What should we do about the swelling, or is this a Vet call?
We have also noticed that one of the hens won't leave the other on alone when she goes into the nesting box. Can this also disrupt the laying process?

Hi and welcome to BYC!
For your first question, it is very, very normal for the hens to have a disrupted laying when they are moved to a new place. As for the smooshed soft shell, Do they have any calcuim in there feed?It could be a calcuim issue.

As for the foot, It sound likes Bumble Foot, Pictures if possible?

Yes, it is COMPLETLY normal for hens to bother each other when they are laying :)
Also, Do you have any idea what age they are?

Best wishes,

Here's the photos of her foot. Does anyone know what this is and what I can do for her? Again, maybe a Vet visit.

As far as their age, I was told that they are just over a year old. And as far as the feed, it has oyster shells in it. - DarLynn Chickens
