Hi All, I was raised with chickens and now after 20+ years I have 5 new chicks....

I have herd that black walnut trees can kill chickens if they get into the walnuts, how about pistachio trees and nuts..

I ask because I have one of each and dont want to hurt the girls...

Thanks

black walnuts are not poisonous to chickens. walnuts are used as a natural wormer for them.

the other two are not on the list for poisonous plants/trees for poultry.

I would like to know the same thing. We have 6 black walnut trees and are looking to get chicks this spring.

Black walnut trees exude a substance that inhibits the growth of plants around it but I have no idea what its effect on chickens would be.

Thanks, I read that on a fourm.... But thats good to know now I dont have to limit there roaming....

they are very acidic. there is no effect on chickens. ours eat the black walnuts and the worms that get in the walnuts. it's a feeding frenzy!

My first chickens lived in a coop along a hedgerow with balck walnuts. Never saw any negative effects from living among them or eating the nuts after they were cracked open by the truck or tractor driving over them.

There are many plants that will be stunted from growing too close and I'm told that their shavings should be kept away from horses, though I have no experience with horses.
