You are new and green so let me give you important advice: because it is addicting , think long and hard about what breeds you REALLY want. Are they to look good, be very friendly, lay lots of eggs (hybrid 'egg machines' don't breed on true in the next generation). or be something rare that you would like to breed on. The first chickens you get, you will keep as you fall in love with them so take your time and think what you really want.
Also, some chickens will come your way unanounced. People will give them to you or you will impulse buy them. Remember that if you don't plan to breed them, you will only need one cock (I am from Ireland and can't seem to refer to them as roosters) The adult males often fight with each other.
If you breed them, 50% will be male, will eat lots and are hard to find great homes for.
Most of us here have more chooks than we had intended to...it happens.
Anyway a warm welcome, what a great hobby we all have.
thanks for that advice! i'm looking for mellow, friendly, laying chickens. i found a place near by, highly recommended, called ranch hag hens, who raise a variety.
just on looks and personality, i am leaning toward buff orpington and gold laced wyandotte--opinions anyone?
well, it's back to the book for me!
