New here, new coop, Questions....

from MN!

What a sweet little coop you have there! Soooooo cute!!

If no one has said it yet, please be sure to replace the chicken wire on the door to the roosting space with a piece of hardware cloth. It's your choice if you want to replace the rest of the run or not, but definitely make sure that nothing can hurt your girlies while they're sleeping. It doesn't look like your barrel latch will take a lock -- might want to think about replacing that too so that you can lock that door at night and keep preds out.

It might not be a bad plan to make a removable window for the door as well, so if it's really raining/blowing, your girls will be protected and the bedding will stay dry. It wouldn't be hard/expensive to fashion something out of a plexiglass remnant on sliders made of trim.

If you put it up on bricks, make sure nothing can come from underneath, either by squeezing through or digging. Might need to bury a perimeter of wire.

Finally, if the roof has asphalt shingles (looks like it in the photo?) then you probably don't want to collect rainwater. Asphalt shingles often contain nasty chemicals and you wouldn't want to feed that to your chickens. For the run, there are lots of clear plexi panels that would work perfectly. If you build them up just a little on the front, the rain will run off better vs. sitting on top.

Enjoy!!

Awww! I'm sorry... but I'm not. LOL
I sped all the way to his house as soon as my kindergartner got out of school. Helps that we live pretty close.

Citychook, can I use the runoff from the shingles in my yard? Maybe just on the non edible parts of the garden?

I don't see why not!

I have a rain barrel. I also have an old house with yucky shingles. Notwithstanding problems with the shingles, the roof also collects bird/squirrel/raccoon poo, pollen, old leaves, moss, etc.... and gets rinsed off each time it rains. Kinda gross when you think of it. I don't use the rainwater for the chickens or the veggies, but my flowers sure do love it.

Here's a webpage that I bookmarked with different information. Glean from it what works for you - Enjoy!

Great!

Another question, i am roofing the run with a corrigated (palstic)? You know, the green or clear wavy roof stuff? I am sure there is a name for it, I just don't know.
I was thinking the clear would be a good choice as it would let the sun shine through, and they will have plenty of shade under the coop, and in the coop. Unless there is another reason I should shade the run as well?
