In the Brooder
Howdy,
My name is Anna. I'm a 25 year old, mom of three, homesteading in Southeast Kentucky.
Chickens were probably my "gateway" animal into the homesteading life. I started in 2012 with a handful of "normal" breeds then ventured my way into Svart Honas, Ayam Cemanis, English Lavender Orpingtons, and Blue Laced Red Wyandottes.
I started raising them exclusively, selling chicks and hatching eggs, to fund my addiction. I got into Svart Honas & Ayam Cemanis when they were the "newest craze" in the chicken world. I was just at a swap meet two weeks ago and someone was selling cemanis for $12 a chick. My eyes went big. I think I paid $350 for 3 unsexed Svart Hona day olds and then $150 for 6 Ayam Cemani hatching eggs from a friend lol.
Anyway, that part of my life had to come to a stop when I stupidly and spontaneously took in a rescue dog whose prey drive was too much to handle. She had severe issues & needed full rehabbing in every aspect of her life. That and I was super pregnant. It was a difficult time in my life, and I sold all my animals... and no one would take a dog with an extensive bite history who was unstable.
As time has gone on, the dog is no longer with us and i'm "back" in the world of chickens. I promised myself I wouldn't go crazy on breeds this time. That i'm SOLELY getting "into" chickens again for eggs + hatching out "normal" chicks.
I can already feel myself coveting those deep dark black copper marans eggs though. My friend raises fantastic Marans, that look AMAZING for the standard, and lay the darkest eggs I have ever seen.
Right now, I have 20 chickens. But Chicken Math gets me, I admit. I have a good mix and suprisingly have been able to stay "sane". What I mean by that, is that I haven't spent more than $10 on a chicken.
I mostly have Black Austrolorps, some Golden Comets, Rhode Island Reds, Easter Eggers, White Cochins, and ONE White Marans hen.
I actually just got "into" quail as well, and that is where my main focus is right now.
They are so different from raising chicks so far.
If you're into Facebook or Instagram, look up my page "Caskey Homestead" and @ChessiesCoop.
Chessie is my dog
I hope to make some interesting chicken connections here with people who "get it" and don't think I'm insane.
