The wind was really strong Shadow Rabbit! Remember, I'm only like 2 miles from you and all of our patio furniture and umbrellas went all over the yard. I have the prettiest sea glass wind chime that I got on my honeymoon and it completely broke apart.

Hi folks,
Just wondering what kind of chicken feed you use? R ight now I'm using southern states medicated chick crumble. They are about 9 wks old now and I know I will have to start feeding them layer food at some point and was wondering which one would be best. I was looking at blue seal and also nutrena nature wise layer feed. Any suggestions/feedback would be great, thanks.

Right now I went with purina Layena plus (has extra omega). It's a pellet and the girls like it. They also free range every day so that keeps down how much they each. Its a 40lb bag and I think it was around $15. I went with what's easy and close. Tractor supply is five min down the road.

So how is everyone's chicks & chickens doing. Any new additions? Any eggs? Still no eggs for me and my girls are 20+ weeks. I'm getting three new chicks the end of August but I was thinking of maybe adding a white egg layer. Does anybody have a hen that will lay white eggs. I seem to have picked all brown layers with exception of my two EE which haven't laid yet so who knows.

I just got some new chicks from Ideal. I got 3 turkens (only plan on keeping one but will wait til they're older to decide), and the surprise special.

don't you feed them grower awhile before layer?

I fed mine a starter grower till about a week & half ago when I switched then to layer pellets. They were going to be 20 wks and I didn't want to buy another whole bag of grower. I probably wouldn't matter if they started to lay while on they grower, I could have then switched and mixed in.

Wow that's a lot of chicks! Lol. Those little naked necks are so cute. I think my kids would get grossed out by it though, lol. :D Are you keeping all of the surprise special, or just a few? What do you think they sent? So cute.

I am planning to keep just a handful of the surprise chicks. It looks like there are SLWs and australorps...a blue Cochin, a blue Andalusian, a few buff orps, and some that might be larkenvelders and hamburgs? And a few I'm thinking are some type of sexlink. I have sold off my extras pretty fast all year so figured I'd get extras so I could pick and choose. And I lost 11 chickens a couple weeks ago to a predator...almost my whole layer flock :( so I'm rebuilding.
