New Jersey

Welcome to all of the new comers!

Our neighbor walked over last night to ask if we have chickens because he found a dead one last week in his yard. It was our RIR "Chickie". The one the opossum took. We got to bury him and my son collected a bunch of shells and stones to decorate the area with. I was so sad but it was nice to have closure. Not knowing where she ended up was really hard. He said he's seen an enormous stray cat roaming around so who knows what it was but the trap is still set and ready.

The remaining girls will be in their summer coop (aka, the temporary one in the garage) until their official one is complete. Nothing is getting them in this new coop. It's so sturdy, put it this way, my husband said if we get another one of these crazy storms or worse yet a hurricane, we are all going out and getting into it.

I'm sorry you had to re-visit the whole thing all over again, but It was nice you got to bury her and get closure finally. It's a good chance then, that maybe it was a cat. Maybe try some stinky tuna cat food. Keep it set in hopes of getting any predator. I worry too when my girls are out all day.

I'm glad your coop will be safe for them. I'm still doing some tweaking. Some trial and error always.

We have this cat food at the Vet hospital where I work that we use for cats when they have no interest in food. It's basically a can of fish heads and I've been putting that in the trap. We know skunks like it!!!

I just posted a thread in the Laws and Ordinance forum. Please take a moment to look at it. There is a bill pending in the New Jersey legislature that would make it illegal for anyone to sell, barter or give away chicks UNDER TWO MONTHS OF AGE!
Please contact your representatives regarding this matter. The issue is under the bill regarding the restraint of an animal in a vehicle, but is buried under a number of other attachments.
Thanks for the heads up! Here is the link for ease of use. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...ohibition-of-selling-chicks-nj-peeps-must-see

It would be nice if some of us could meet up. I hope that trap holds something before you put the girls out there.
On another note, I just dropped off my rooster to his new digs. It doesn't compare to what he had. I feel awful, he looked lost when I put him down. They wont eat him though. I'm going to drown my sorrows with some wine now.
