New Jersey

Only four:( i have 5 now. It's just so hard because there are so many cool breeds out there!!! I thought my kids (ok, me really) would get a kick out of hatching and selling them. My hopes would be that no one would buy them and i'd have to keep them.

I just hope you don't have crappy neighbors nearby like mine that might report you. I got reported for having my coop too close to the fence. We got into a fight with this guy next door a few years ago, but it isn't even his house! Him and his wife live across town. We live next to his mother in law, but they sometimes stay at the house on weekends. This jerk claimed that my chickens were waking up his wife (WHO DOESN'T EVEN LIVE THERE) even though the coop was only two feet out of boundaries. The zoning director came to our house an we ended up moving the coop over and had to rebuild our run to fit within the boundaries. It didn't really make much of a difference though, because my birds are no quieter than before. In the fall, I caught him spraying my hens with a hose too.

I'd be furious if i caught them spraying my chickens with a hose! What's the set back line for your neighbors property line? Ours is 5 feet. Our property is surrounded by a privacy fence and a thick row of hedges so i don't even think two of our neighbors know they're there. The neighbor directly next to our coop thinks they're great. He's a butcher at the stop n shop. We give him eggs (from walmart) every so often and he's happy.

So I have a dumb question to ask-

I would love to get an incubator and hatch eggs this spring. What do you do with the roos that you hatch and in your past experiences, what would you guess the ratio to male:female eggs are?
Last year I hatched under a broody (4 times). I got about 60% pullets. All the roosters went to freezer camp.

That's good. Our basic requirements include:
- Coop must be behind your house, not on the side or in the front (our run is on the side of our house. The inspector said something, but we explained that a coop and a run are two different things. The rules say nothing about a run, but he insisted that it shouldn't be there. However, he is reluctantly letting it stay, unless we get reported again.)
- the coop must be 4 feet away from all property lines (ours was about 2 1/2 before)
- Birds should not be visible from the road
- 12 bird maximum, including ONE rooster if desired
- Coops must be cleaned regularly and shall not emit excessive foul odors
There never used to be rules until last year when some jerk let his birds run through people's yards. However, the laws say nothing about ducks, turkeys, emus, or any other poultry.... ;) not that I'd be getting anything else though, I don't have room.

I've had good luck and bad luck with my hatches. Generally when I was running the warren county poultry show, I had no problem getting rid of my extra roosters. Now that I don't do that anymore, I've been taking them to hackettstown auction. My family wouldn't eat them if I killed then myself so I'd rather they get a chance at a good home via auction, or a person that will actually eat the bird.

wow. To bad you probably don't feel like dealing with the fall out because if the neighbors complained about the "noise" from your chickens, you could get a rooster since you're allowed to have one and see how they like that noise!

It stinks that you can have 12 and i can only have 4. We're two miles away from each other!!!

No, he has no clue! :) He always says they are the best eggs he's ever had. I guess a white jumbo walmart egg is just as good as an organic, freshly laid egg. Who knew

Omg that is just too funny!

I would only get a rooster if I found a quieter one that needed a home. Even if he does crow, there's nothing the neighbors can do about it. :) They are all annoying, so I don't care if it bothers them. The people behind me probably wouldn't even hear it between their son's garage band, their ever playing radio, and their three constantly barking dogs. :/
