I feel so naive or maybe its because of the field I'm in but I had no idea that people thought otherwise regarding the pain, suffering, and cognitive abilities of chickens/birds described in the article. People think they don't experience pain and fear???? Did I misread it!

I have regularly come across people who think they are mindless automatons with feathers - no brain at all. They think that's where bird-brain comes from - because they have no brains. (Ok, they don't help their own poor reputation by staying out in the rain, but still...) Along with that goes the assumption that they cannot feel pain. Get used to it - you will find this attitude more common than not. Don't get upset - just feel sorry for people who live with that kind of ignorance and lack of compassion. In a weird way, it kind of enhances the joy and excitement of discovering how "with it" they are, how involved they are in participating in their world. It's like we chicken owners are privileged to watch a slice of life that others never get to see, and our own lives are enhanced by it. Watching "chicken tv" never gets old.
Had lots of fun at York today! Won Champion Heavy Duck, champion Standard Duck and champion JR waterfowl with my black Muscovy hen, champion JR Cont with my Houdan, reserve JR game with my Wheaten Hen and reserve JR AOSB with my sumatra pullet!!! I also bought a BT white Cochin and buff brahma pullets the white Cochin is sooo nice I can't wait to show her
