New Jersey

Hello NJ,
I'm in Ocean County
Anyone know someone around here that processes meat birds or spare roos? I don't want to do it myself ... at least not the first couple times. I don't have meat birds yet but spare layer roos that are growing out.
Anyone around here caponize their roos?
Anyone around here show their birds? And HELLO to everyone here in the gorgeous garden state :)
I also live in Ocean County and I show my birds. I had champion LF on a Welsummer hen and champion waterfowl and Super Grand Champion of the show on a young Gray Rouen female at this past weekends Gloucester Co Fair

Not sure where you are in Ocean County, but we take our roos to Godek's Farm (Abattoir) in Morganville, NJ (On Rt. 79, not far off Rt. 18).  It's about 35 minutes from us (we are in Howell on the Brick border).  They charge $2.00 a bird.   I hand them off and then wait in the car (I don't need to hear).  It takes about 10 minutes and they bring them back out to you in plastic bags or whatever you give them to use.   A few pin feathers left here and there, but we have been pleased so far (I'm sure better than we would do).

If you take them somewhere to process, I would suggest you bring a cooler with ice water and immediately put the bags in that water for the ride home.  The first time we did, the skin turned a bit dark and got taught (I presume from residual body heat in transit).   After that, we did the ice water bath and by the time we get home they are cold and the skin is light and supple.
Thanks for the info. I'm in howell too and was thinking of trying it myself but at $2 a bird it seems worth it.

Hey, how's everyone in NJ doing? I used to be a pretty active member, but then I took a break from the forums for about a year. (If anyone remembers me). Also, hello to all the new members from NJ!

Hey all! I'm from Salem County. Pittsgrove to be exact. Just a few minutes from Vineland, near the Maurice River and route 55. We just got our first chickens (mail order chicks from Cackle Hatcheries) in April this year. We have 19 now. 5 Buff Orpingtons, 5 Buckeyes, 5 Dominiques and 4 that I believe are RIR's (they came from TS labeled mixed red pullets). We had 6 more but they were all roos that came from a straight run shipment of the BO's. We ended up taking them to Cedar Lane auction on Tuesday. They were picking on each other and the pullets. Glad to see so many NJ chicken people here!

Oh I've read so many good things about the breeds you've selected! I wound up choosing a buff orpington, red orpington, a lemon cuckoo orpington and 4 BBS orpingtons
A golden cuckoo Marans and a regular cuckoo Marans and a black copper Marans
Some wheaten Americaunas and a gold laced red Wyandotte
And two cream legbars that turned out to be roos along with a bantam cochin that is a roo. Cuties though.
Definitely some of my straight run orpingtons are roos but they're only about 5 weeks now so I'm still waiting to see who is who for sure.

And I have more wheaten Americaunas and some lemon cuckoo orpington eggs on the way next week for the incubator! :)

I'm addicted already...

Welcome! I love my buff Orpington, by the way. :)

Hi All!

Still in hopes that someone from NW Jersey with laying hens they want to sell shows up

I am at the intersections of Morris, Warren & Sussex. My flock is currently Roo heavy (4 out of 8) and I'll be trading down to 1 silkie & one OEG Roo. and hopefully adding a few hens....

Go to the Warren Co fair. They have a pen of red sex links for sale there - it's a 4 H project. They are mislabeled RIR, but are red sex links for sure. They look to be approximately 12 weeks old. I have no idea what the price is. While there go to the Stewartsville Grange stand and have a piece of their incredible pie - 15 different kinds to choose from.
