Pics
Thanks! You know that's the first creative thing I've ever done in my 44 years, so that's a really nice compliment :)

Mingming- Those pics are great! Very creative :) You're like Anne Geddes for chicks. Seeing them so little makes me wish I got my chicks earlier than 5 weeks.
Shadow Rabbit- Your chickens sound awesome! Since I'm new to the world of chickens, I don't know some of your breeds but they sound beautiful. I can't believe we live about 2 miles away from each other and there's such a difference in what we each can have. I'd love to come see them.
NJchix- I love your flock. It looks like I have similar ones to you and I can't wait for mine to grow up into big girls :) Mac looks awesome too. I work with dogs and cats and he's gorgeous.

Thank you! He's a washed up show dog, lol. Well it's official, my speckled Sussex "SUSPECTED" cockerel let out a little crow today :( I guess I just have to face the reality that my little buddy, who loves me more than the rest, is a boy. I said I was going to wait till an egg or crow. It's going to be hard to say goodbye.

Sorry to hear it. You know, I have 2 hens that crow. Yes, I am positive they are hens since I have seen them both lay eggs, but they both crow. The first time I heard it I thought a stray rooster had taken up residence and was looking all over for it Imagine my surprise when I realized it was a hen.

JerseyHen- i wish i can say thats my case but i dont think so. If any one thinks they have a space for my speckled sussex boy, I'll be looking for a new home for him. I have a hard time just posting it on Craigslist but I will if I can't find a home locally. So what's everyone's plans this weekend. It's going to be nice & the girls will sure like to roam the yard. I have to keep them out of my neighbors pool area. They can squeeze through the fence still. I'm thinking of zip tying deer netting along the bottom. You can see in previous post photos the type of fence it is. I'm not so sure they even know I have them and don't want to freak them out with chickens lounging by their pool, lol. They are never home though.

Oh njchixs he's gorgeous! Sorry you have to rehome him. I would take him but we cab't have boys. I love his speckles.
So I have to ask what is probably the dumbest question. I should post it on the "city slicker" thread! Keep in mind I'm new to chickens. How can you tell the difference between a boy and girl? Is it their comb?

The boys wil generally get redder in the comb and wattles way before the girls. Anywhere from six to nine weeks is a good indication which way it is going. If you look at the picture above real close you can see the Sussex comb is waaay bigger than the red sex link. Roosters also tend to feather in slower than the girls, so that might help you ID one earlier. When your ready post the comb and full body shots on the what gender thread. How are your new little ones doing?

Ok so its not as easy as looking at a dog. :) Mine are doing great. I am attached to each one of them and can't wait to see them when I get home from work each day. And I never thought I'd say this but I can definately see personalities in them. My BO is a riot. And the boss. Their coop is coming along. I can't wait till it's finished so I can move them into their real home and out of the temporary one in the garage.

I hear you about the coop. Mine is not done yet either and they have outgrown the container in the garage. I've been hauling them out to the dog kennel each day and bringing them back in every night. Tonight I am leaving them out there. The are barricaded inside the doghouse and all snuggled together. I'm just so nervous. I sleep with my windows open so hopefully myself or the dog will hear anything. Plus the neighbors dog stays kenneled outside about 75 ft from them. Glad your little ones are good. My BO is named Henny Penny and she not too thrilled with us holding her. She will be your friend for some mealworms though.
