I don't think a day goes by when I don't learn something new about chickens. Either here on BYC or talking to old timers at the feed store or even in my own bavkyard. A few years ago (before we actually got our first) we went to Cedar Lane Feeds and attended a talk by a lady from Delaware State University. I loved it but alot of the info went over my head. Now I can relate. I also would like to meet some local chicken lovers. See you Wednesday!

Hello everyone. So, the saying is definitely true "early bird gets the worm". Chicken fever hit this week, i have been on the hunt for some chicks. Seems like every site online is sold out on the breeds i was interested in. I have 3 kids, and we loved having chickens last summer. This year i wanted to buy some more interesting chickens like E.E., olive eggers. If anyone knows someone in northern nj that can help, i would really appreciate it! thanks!!

you could always go to a farm in NY, my parents live in northern nj and they drive into NY to my aunts farm in about an hour, she has about 600 chickens

lots of farmers and suppliers, could be a fun trip if youre willing to drive.

I had a hawk IN my coop yesterday!!! It got 2 banties by the time I discovered it, but WOW it was amazing to see one that up close and personal.

So sorry to hear about the banties. Its hard to understand that hawks and other predators need to eat too. They just shouldn't eat our feathered friends. How did the hawk get in? How did it get out? I hope your girls recover quickly from this terrifying ordeal.

The chicken talk put on by Mame1616 is actually in the library at Buena Regional HS. Its tonite (6-8pm) so its not too late to go if you don't have any other plans. I called the library at 856-697-2400 ext 8231 and gave my name and how many attending. Easy!

I freerange, so I am very familiar with predatory losses. I accept that an occasional loss to a hawk is a fair exchange for the life my birds get to lead. We live at the base of a mountain and large expanse of state park/game land so we deal with all manner of predator year round. I have never had one go inside the coop before though, in the run from time to time, but not the coop! It probably flew right in the door and I let it out the same way. The poor hens are beside themselves today, so I am keeping them all cooped in. In hindsight, I should have verified it wasn't a more dangerous predator before bursting into the coop to "rescue" my girls. Can you imagine if it was a bear fresh out of hibernation or something?
