Hello! I posted this same message in my introduction and on the social forum, but I wanted to reach out to my fellow NJ residents! I am a special education teacher in New Jersey. I have my undergraduate degree in social work, seven New Jersey Education certifications and my Masters in Special Education. I am also an adjunct professor in the Education/Special Education Department of a university. I have used classroom animals with my students in a private school setting and three public schools. My students have emotional/behavioral issues, as well as learning disabilities. The animals provided a nurturing classroom environment, helped to develop social skills and were integrated into the academic standards. My students with ED/BD also completed a Service Learning Project, sharing their knowledge of the classroom pets with students with multiple disabilities/autism. I was also a winner of the Pets in the Classroom Lesson Plan submission for two years in a row. We have had Reading Therapy Dogs, frogs/toads, lizards, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, turtles, hermit crabs, fish... We called one program, “Reading with Rodents!” My students have had terrific, healing, growing experiences with I am now looking into developing a program using chickens – and I came across your site. Any information you would be able to provide would be greatly appreciated, especially in the area of "certification" of my chickens.

You could have them help design and build a chicken coop with attached run and then learn about taking care of the chickens.

My daughter and I are brand new to chickens. We just got 3 new chicks: 1 Silkie, 1 Americauna, and 1 Buff Orpington. We are in Jackson, close to Rt 9

Anyone going to the Chick Day at Monmouth Feed & Supply in Farmingdale tomorrow? We are going to the new chick workshop they are offering at 2pm. Maybe we should tie a red ribbon on somewhere so we can recognize other BackYardChicken people?

No but I'm going to the "Miss Hen" pageant they are having there on May 5, lol! It's the second one and from what the owners said of last year's it sounds like a lot of fun. I'm not bringing any of my chooks, just going as a spectator.

Hi to all the Jersey chicken ppl! I'm from Millstone Two - near Jackson and Freehold. Wondering if anyone knows where to buy a reasonable coop under $1000. My boyfriend and I are NOT handy so I will not be building one. My ex husband is a master carpenter and I keep trying to con him into building one - but he's so busy. Any suggestions would be appreciated Thanks

Not offhand. All the cheap ones were thin and flimsy and the sturdy ones were all 2k or more that we saw. maybe if you find an old shed for sale. It even cost us 1200 to build our coop and run
